If you're using OS 10.4.8 then it should already have Java 5 installed. You can check by going to the Utilities folder, Java > J2SE 5.0

How did you download the LW installer? Definitely do not use internet Explorer because it can't handle dmg files & you end up with an incomplete dmg file.

Download it with Safari. Then drag & drop it onto Disk Copy if it doesn't open automatically. Do you have stuffit expander? If yes, disable it from handling dmg files. It doesn't always handle them properly. Let us know how you get on.
