Hi Frans,

Which version of LW are you using? AVG upd@ting/scanning seems to be broken in some (if not all) LW versions. Check this link for more info: avg not scanning

If you already have an AV installed, you can use that to scan files after download. Find where LW has saved the download (tools > options > transfers will show you the location) > open that folder > right click the new download > you should see the option to scan with your AV program.
Remember to scan downloads before opening them

If you don't have an AV program installed, check the links below for info about freeware.

Regarding the disk problem message - do you have space left on your HDD? People have had this message in the past & sometimes defragmenting the HDD helps. In other cases, people have found that saving downloads to another drive was the fix.
