These volunteers keep the board organized and moving. Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity) Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum. Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules. Delete posts.  Suspicious File I'm running Bear Share Lite ver# 5.2.1 on Win XP I've noticed in the "Downloads" section along with the files I'm searching for is a search in red font: BSInstall5.2.5.1.exe and it's searching I've run my spyware programs and anti virus scans on it with no luck. I searched it in Google and it seems suspicious. I've deleted this item several times but it keeps reappearing. it's acting VERY much like a virus or trogen? Please respond ASAP as I would hate to delete Bear Share but I will if the overall health of my computer is at stake? Thanks  ........ Dave

| its just the auto update thing that version does occasionally... skip that sucker....uninstall it, and install the beta version detailed here: BearShare has been sabotaged. follow the intructions and use the bearstart utility to get it running..force it into UP mode, and rock on! |

| Thanks Peerless: If it only does it occasionally, why has it been there everytime I've been there in the past 3 days and I've never seen it untill very recently? I'm also sorry but I don't want anything to do with "beta' programs. I'll leave those to you EXPERTS And I have no clue what "Bearstart" utility is. BTW I have discovered that the previous version # 4.7.0.83 seems to be ok with the exception of the flashing UPDATE thing lol I guess I'm a little paranoid and things like this bother me. Thanks VERY much for your rapid reply tho .... Dave

| I saw the same thing once (also for a period of time) when using the same version of lite...bugged me too....kept on killing it, it kept on coming back..I am pretty sure that BearShare spreads its updates via the network, so that is what you are seeing..an attempt to download it (which since that is also expired, is impossible..lol0 AaronWalkhouse guided me on the proper path, as it were, and advised the expired beta version...it works like a charm... the following excerpt is from the Technutopia forums: To keep running the BearShare 5.1.20 beta forever (it works well here), just download the attached little proggy BearStart and set your BearShare shortcut to point to that. It sets the system date back to July 1st, 2005, starts the last version of BearShare installed, and then puts the system date back to the date it was before after a few seconds. No ini files or registry mods - completely standalone. No installation - just unzip and run. It reads the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\gnufile\shell \open\command" set up by the BearShare install program to find what to run. so...just download the beta version and the besrstart utility, and use it d00d..it really blows the socks offa other things....just go into the configuration menu and force UltraPeer mode, and you will ROCK! |

| to do what is described above (set your BearShare shortcut to point to that) is kinda a pain..what i do is just directly use the BearStart.exe...since you are using xp, right click on the BearStart.exe and choose 'pin to start menu' and from that point on just go to Start>BearStart.exe to run the beta version...its a final beta, and as noted, ROCKS |

| Peerless I'm really not that adapt at using Bear. I'm very willing to learn any tips tho. I just don't want to take up so much of your time. I have a fair knowledge of basic computer things JUST not this program. I have no clue as to what you mean by: just go into the configuration menu and force UltraPeer mode, and you will ROCK! I'll make a deal with you??? LOL I'll try the new beta version if you send me a detailed tutorial of how to best configue it. I really do hope you have it handy so you can easily copy and paste it to me? I appoligise for only coming here when I have a question or problem. Thanks HUGE ....... Dave
