Firewall Issues

Thanks for the portable version. I haven't been able to use bearshare for awhile. I still have problems with the firewall I set the port to 6348. It's still flashing yellow. Any suggestions???

Have you set BearShare to have clearance in your software firewall? Giving it total UDP and TCP clearance for whichever ports it is using? If not, open your firewall control panel and choose Add program to the safe list.

You might need to port forward your connection device. It probably has NAT firewall which is partially blocking BearShare. If you wish to do this, go to Port Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model - PortForward.com and find your model of modem/router, then click the model link. Click the skip advertisement on next page, then look for BearShare on the list of programs and follow the instructions given. :) Then BearShare should be 100% all clear for connecting.
ie: the 5.1 version did not have UPnP support, which is a process that requests a modem/router to open a port whilst the program is running.

nice program...

here's what I noticed (and it's typical of all the versions of BS5.1.0b25)....upon first run it takes a while to get connected and then only connects to LW hosts...pfffffffffffffftttt....furthermore it won't get connected to any BS hosts even after an hour....

what I did was to simply kill the program and then restart and was immediately connected to BS hosts and went into full ultra peer mode...the only drawback to this is I also was immediately the victim of COUNTLESS DDOS attacks...on the flip side being connected to LW hosts gave virtually no search results

Were they LimeWire 4.21.1 (rc) hosts, if so get rid of them. They're spammers. Also if you block port 27016 from your firewall this will help stop connecting to some spammers. Rather embarrassingly I found my Gnucleus connection file had 30% of these spammers with port 27016. Fixed now though after Birdy's advice about the firewall and her research on LimeWire 4.21.1 on my behalf.

I suspect the new gwebcache sites are more trusty than the old ones that come with the full-version regular BearShare installer. At least one of the old gwebcache sites seems to give out-of-date connection data (but perhaps that was just the effect on me.)

Is anyone else receiving an error stating:

"Cannot find import; DLL may be missin, corrup, or wrong version. File COMCTL32.dll, Error1001"

I'm running Win7 x32 SP1

I can confirm the problem seems to be related to running the portable version on Windows 7.
Opens fine on Win XP. You may need to wait for File_Girl71 to try to find a solution. Whenever that might be. She has not been online here for a little while.

Unlike Peerless, on my XP the portable connected to BS peers straight away. Strangely I connected to a few of the non-BS hosts that are on the connection list I posted here. One of the hosts I had not seen for quite a while.

step 3 and 4 of my guide should work for your date change problem,,,dont hold me to that because i've never used BS portable, when doing step 4 pick any date you want BS portable to run as... let me know if this helps!
