From scanner to WORD

How to transfer a scanned document to WORD for editing?

I use two scanners: one, the hp flatbed scanner hp 3970 series; the other
Hp deskjet 1050A J410.

I am on Windows 10.

If possible, step-by-step instructions, please, that I can easily copy for reference.

Thanks in advance.

It's been many years since I've done it. :o So I googled it. I hope the following link is of help.

I also found these links:

From memory I used a PDF option to export from scanner to as an intermediate step. But we also had Acrobat Pro. We also had an OCR software.

Last time I used it for text was for digitizing my grandfather's hand-typed autobiography (from the 50's/60's), which earlier this decade was finally released to the public in print.

Many thanks again. My problem is that my Hp Flatbed scanner 3970 is not compatible with Windows 10 for editing a scanned document with WORD.
Is there a safe and inexpensive software to purchase to enable me to do this job?

Kind regards.

Joe

What is the title of your dear grandfather's autobiography, please? I might be able to get it.

Renewed thanks.

Try googling
ocr scanner software free download
or just
ocr scanner software

I have no idea how well the free versions work. Sometimes when it's advertised as 'free' it is in fact trial-ware or some other limitations deliberately put onto it.

1. I found these links which are all the one software called "FreeOCR" but it does not say Windows 10 support: Free OCR Software - Optical Character Recognition and Scanning Software for Windows - import from PDF and Twain Scanners
/ FreeOCR Downloads for Windows.
Review: FreeOCR | Gizmo's Freeware. But be extremely careful of the 3rd party (Malware) options in the installer.

2. Online OCR service Free Online OCR - convert scanned PDF and images to Word, JPEG to Word simply upload the scanned file & have it converted to text.

I can't quite remember but I think the name of the OCR software I used was OmniPage and very good but it was a commercial software and not cheap.

VueScan x64

This message for "Lord of the Rings" and "Gedstar", both of whom have been doing their best to help me out with how to use VueScan x64 for converting to WORD a scanned document from my flatbed scanner which is not compatible for purpose with windows 10.

Unfortunately, after a lot of hard work, over several hours of trial and error, I have failed to make the method work for me. I find VueScanx64 rather complicated and frustrating. For example, although I have tried to match your methods by applying them on my computer, VueScan comes up with different dialog boxes which allow me only partially to follow your solutions.
I keep ending up with a dialog box from WORD asking me to "choose encoding to make my document readable". This gets me nowhere.

Am trying to get help from a relative who is on holiday here for a few days.

In closing, do please rest assured that I always treasure all help from several people on the Photoshop Gurus Forum who invariably are not only very knowledgeable but also kind and patient with me, a slowcoach...
