Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

I have that too. Most are completed but last night the last 3 were all interuppted.
Also can anyone educate me on the subject of Bearshare clients uploading from me?
In my monitor box 3 uploads were attempted or made by Bearshare clients. 2 of them had "Browse Host" grayed out so I could not even connect to them. How can they connect to me? I thought Limewire was a P2P within its own "community" of Limewire users.
Also none of my uploaders could I connect. The other 7 that were LimeWire Pro clients kept returning error messages that they couldn't be browsed. Any info would be educational since I am very green at all this!

Hmmm. Others could be disconnecting, but if most of the uploads are interrupted, then that's not likely.

Here's an example of an ISP disrupting uploads: the upload starts properly, but then interrupts for 60-75 seconds. This means the upload usually times out. The pink peaks are the key.

You can see details (and the graph) of uploads in the Tools->Bandwidth->Uploads section. If either of you see something similar, then I'd say your ISP is disrupting uploads to the gnutella network.

Well, I still like them: 29.95 for 5M/1M, and a community not-for-profit organization. I'm still negotiating with them to stop this protocol-preferencing.

Just have to get the arguments together and direct them to the right person

hehe, you also have to find the right person on their end: when I call my ISP I have to go through 5 persons to find someone with knowledge and power to change config

Of course, your pocket is the last thing that decides of the ISP

Ciao

Hi Mom. It shouldn't matter about the BearShares--they're just the ones that finding new content quickly recently.

Are you seeing a similar graph?

et voilà -- I've signed up for the free 2 month trial with the competition: should be installed later this week Then I'll have the comparison graphs to send.

Salut Lyssa&JuliasMom, yes it is normal, especially that if you get a lot of bearshares, that means that your are in the download mesh (many people uploading parts of the same file). You shouldn't see many tranfer interrupted for rare files, if the file is popular, you'll see a lot of transfers interrupted.

Stief: haha, competition, competition, when they see that, it's in their interest to make things move... If they don't threathen them to place a negative review of that ISP at http://www.broadbandreports.com/ (explain them what this site is all about...)

Ciao

ISP should be very worried if they show they can control the type of packets being sent. Imagine if the mail carrier could be charged for the contents of a letter, or the telephone company had to be responsible for what people said on the phone!

Canadian ISP's should not engage in packet preferencing, or risk regulation http://www.michaelgeist.ca/resc/html...mar212005.html

European ISP's have to worry about taking on the job of enforcing copyright infringement.
http://constitutionalcode.blogspot.c...osals-isp.html

US ISP's have to worry about class-action suits LOTR posted a link about BearShare and a major ISP getting lawyers involved over this kind of interference.

I do not have any activity either up or down right now so my bandwith is quiet. I will check it in the future and now I know what I am looking for! Attached is my monitor screen--why isn't the time displayed so I would know when the transfers were interupted, and is browse host grayed out?
Thanks again... ya'll have been very informative.

P.S. I have tried 3 times to attach my grab of my monitor screen. It is 89,000 bytes so it is under the limit and it is a JPG....when I go to preview reply--it is no longer attached...can you help me again??? Sorry

Ah--don't do the preview reply step (not sure why that strips the attachment).

btw--posting the monitor screen is probably not a good idea, since it contains filenames, IP's, and lots of personally identifying material.

The start/end/transfer times and rates can be seen by turning on the extended tooltips.

Ask someone to Direct Connect with you, and then you can use LW's Chat and really see what is going on.

I agree et voilà

Mom--I wonder if they are using CISCO's NBAR filesharing controls http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/....htm#wp1074479 Look for the parts about "gnutella"

I gather this is built into much of the CISCO equipment ISP's use.

Call them and ask if this is the case. However, good luck finding someone who can answer. Two years ago the help desk at my ISP wasn't aware that the guys who run the equipment were using this stuff, so don't be surprised if the help desk is just as much in the dark as we are.
