Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default Ultrapeer Capabilities

Under the "speed" section in options there is a section called "Ultrapeer Capabilities", I have a cable connection .Should the box labeled "disable ultrapeer capabilities "be checked, and will it help my downloading?
Thank you

For searching generally yes it is better to disable ultrapeer.

Hmmm--your search results should be just as good when running as an Ultrapeer. There was a version where that didn't happen, but I thought it was fixed by now, since the devs in no way wanted to penalize ultrapeers . . .

What version are you using?

stief

I have found that when running in UP mode it usually take several hours to to get to 30/14 after 24 hrs maybe 30/18 as soon as you start to search it will drop 5 to 8 leaves. I have cable 650kb down 45kb up which is more than enough for UP I very rarely DL in UP so there is no reason for it no to get to 30/30
I am running 4.9.28 Pro. I also know that people that have faster connections full T3 have no problem reaching the 30/30 number.

Hi GP

I can't find the note offhand, but the leaf count shouldn't affect the search results (it's the other UP's that you are connected to that count).

You're right that the current releases don't max out the leaf slots as quickly. Even with a 5mbps down 1 mbps up cable (almost a T3), I rarely see 30 lefs connected, but I do get up to the 24 peers within a couple of minutes, and the next six peers come pretty quickly too.

Search result effectiveness is tough to evaluate. Still, if I get a chance I'll check around and see if I can get a better answer to the leaf/UP search effectiveness question. The devs should make sure UP's are being rewarded for their contribution to the network.

cheers

Hi stief

I usually get about 28 peers and between 5-6 leafs , I'm only on a 2.2mbit connection, which really stretches my 512 ram, I can not figure out yet what Limewire is doing, this happens every time I connect I have never been a leaf unless I disconect Then reconect quickley, but after 15 min it goes to Ultrapeer again, any ideas?

Disabe UP mode. I am not at home right now so I don't have LW open but I believe it is tools/speed then tick the disable UP box. Any way it is in the tools menu

Sgt: Here's an example of how results vary. The 413 results were as an ultrapeer; the others were all connected to a different set of leafs. Your automatic reconnection as an UP says you have a very good connection that is in demand.

I disconnected and disabled UP in the speed section of the options (you recalled correctly GP), then tried searching as a leaf, disconnecting and reconnecting each time.

I'm still trying for a better answer about the the search horizon capabilities of a leaf vs and ultrapeer with the newer versions.

I'm sorry for sounding stupid, but what exactly is an 'Ultrapeer'? I too have seen it in the Options menu but I didn't want to tamper with it because I didn't know what it was.

An ultrapeer is what leafs connect to, and direct most of the traffic as efficiently as possible.

UP's basically communicate with each other and look after a set of leafs (max 30 in LW).

The UP handle most of the message traffic, and shield the leafs from irrelevant queries, only sending requests to a leaf if they have the file and are likely to be able to deliver it (they're not too busy)

This frees up the leafs from getting flooded with requests that could otherwise clog the system.

You can see your details in the options-> bug reports->view example if you scroll down a bit

Uptime: 2:31
Is Connected: true
Number of Ultrapeer -> Ultrapeer Connections: 24
Number of Ultrapeer -> Leaf Connections: 0
Number of Leaf -> Ultrapeer Connections: 0

If you need more info, I can probably dig up some links. I haven't checked the LW FAQ for a while, but it should give you the basics.

btw-with 2.5 minutes of uptime, a what's new image search with 24 peers and no leafs yet got me 498 results.

So no leafs were needed to get results when running as an ultrapeer.

Some people don't want to be an Ultrapeer. Is it best to be one or not?

Best?

The network relies on up's, and you have to have a good connection to be one.

If you want to leech, don't be an UP, because UP's donate bandwidth for everyone else's searches.

It's best for the network to be an ultrapeer. Without enough Ultrapeers, new users or users with slow or badly configured connections can't get connected or get decent results.

check out http://www.limewire.com/english/content/netsize.shtml

the red line shows the UP's; the green shows all the others.

I'll stick with being an Ultrapeer then. I don't want to be a leech.
