Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question Please don't kill me...

I know y'all are sick to DEATH of explaining things to those of us who are completely new and ignorant as h*ll, but please advise:

I have spent two days doing everything you all have advised. I called my provider, Yahoo DSL, and they said they don't restrict anything. I did the speed test, my results were Download Speed: 1922 kbps (240.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 414 kbps (51.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
I have tweaked my uploads/dowloads bars, etc. I opened my collection of music for folks to upload so I wouldn't be a freeloader. I have done everything I can think of. I only connect to folks who have a T3 or higher connection. I only try 4 star stuff. My downloads very rarely exceed 2 kbps. I am very saddened and depressed about this. This is the main reason I purchased DSL! I have read page after page of advice from all of you, and most of it makes no sense at all to me. I don't have any idea how broadband works. Lee, you should write a book! So, if the folks I am connected to have a great connection, the servers aren't overloaded, and the solar syatem is aligned I should creep up to 10 kbps or so, right? I'd love to get up to 50+. I hate to even bring this up. Please advise, or help a newbie understand. Thanks for your time and endless patience. I have a PC, Win XP, 2wire router, Yahoo DSL service, and I can't think of anything else. Thanks...

You are one of the few people that have actually done their homework before posting Good job

The only thing that I can think of that might cause a problem like that is some kind of conflict between firewalls or antivirus/antispyware programs or if you are sharing an extreme amount of files which (sometimes) can cause problems.

Is that the speed for many downloads or is it 2 KB total. If you have too many things downloading at once that could cause some problems as well

Are you a new user of Limewire ? or has it worked before

What Firewall are you using if any ? (never use more than one)

Also what Antivirus/antispywareprograms do you use ?

Do you use UPnP ? (in the advanced<firewall)

if you do. Are you sure that your router is configured correctly for it ?

What version Java ?

I recommend using either an old Limewire version without BitTorrent support or Phex for Gnutella, Azureus is BitTorrent. None of this Limewire Gnutellatorrent hybrid crap.

"You are one of the few people that have actually done their homework before posting Good job"

Thanks! I tried to fix it myself. I even tried setting the ports for my router and for the stupid WINXP sp2.
I might have set them to something ridiculous, if y'all have the proper router numbers that would be awesome.

I did open my library to share, about 900 songs, should I cut it down?

I only download 4 things at a time usually.

I am a newbie with Limewire.

I have Symantec Antivirus, don't know of it's firewalled... I'll check, and if it is, should I disable it since WINXP has a built in one?

"Do you use UPnP ? (in the advanced<firewall)"
Huh? I am unsure of what that means... sorry!

I followed some online instructions to configure the router, 2wire 1710HP

I allowed Gnutella, manually added limewire and bittorrent, coulda screwed the pooch there.

Thank you so so so much for your help. I'm hoping that if I configure the XP crap and my router correctly I'll get some good ownloading. Heck, I could download 2kbps with my stupid 56k modem!!!

Thanks again,

Michelle

UPnP (Universal Plug N Play) is a function that allows you to connect through Firewalled routers easily, if your router supports it. I don't know with your router, but you should try setting Limewire to use UPnP. Maybe it will make it work.

In Limewire go to

tools<options<advanced<firewall and tick the (use UPnP) box, then restart Limewire
If it doesn't work you can always change it back

4 downloads at a time shouldn't cause problems

Sharing 900 songs shouldn't cause probems either, but it's a bit high number. The people that go after filesharers usually go after those that share 1000+ files as I understand, but 900 is pretty close to 1000 so maybe you should cut down just a bit

If you have some kind of security suite it will for sure have a firewall built in. Don't know if Symantec antivirus does though if it's just the antivirus. I have heard that the windows firewall isn't the best, so if you have another firewall then you should use it instead.

If you have the manual for your router, it should say if it is UPnP compatable, also if it uses NAT-firewalling. If it uses both then UPnP is the way to go.

Did your ISP provide you with your router ? Then they should be able to answer those questions as well, and tell you how to configure it
