Crazy Slow Downloads.. yea.. another thread.. read..

OK.. I Know this has been posted,.. several times, and I've seen nothing other than the same responses time and time again.. So here's the deal.. I had limewire pro on my comp, and things worked great... I wiped my comp clean.. reinstalled newest version of limewire pro.. now things suck.. Used to hit 150k/s regularly, now I can't seem to get more than 1k/s.

As for the regular questions, I have an awesome computer set up.. real fast, lots of ram.. I have norton internet security for my firewall, and its allowing all connections for LW.. I have a linksys router, and have forwarded the proper ports... and i see no firewall sign in LW, so that's good. I don't share with computers too often, occasionally my dad's laptop is on the network, but not too often. Its slow at all times, day and night, and I've yet to call my ISP, but I shall do that tomorrow morning. I don't believe they filter and limit P2P, but I'll check anyways.. Assuming that P2P is not an issue with my ISP, does anyone have any ideas? THX (I'm on day 3 of download a tv episode..

btw, i've tried everything on whatever list is floatin around these forums.. downloading magnet somethin or other, and testing at some website.. and speed tests and the whole bit, so same problem..

Have you tried deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's closed? Instructions are in points 2 & 3 of the thread below. Remember the folder's hidden, so you'll have to show hidden files & folders to see it.

Is your Java up to date? The latest JRE is update 9. Point 1 in that thread has a link for download. Just remember to use the offline installer.

BTW who is your ISP?

So, I've done both things you suggested, as well as contact my ISP who apparently does not filter or limit p2p activity, so I'm going to do one final spyware and virus check, and if nothing is found from there, then I'm all out of ideas.. anyone else?

My ISP is called Platinum Communications.. they handle most of the rural area around Calgary, Canada

Someone else who uses Platinum had the same problem a couple of days ago...
limewire is crapping out


Have you tried other p2p apps & does the same thing happen? It would be worth you trying another app, to see if it's just a LW problem. The other person had the same trouble with another app, which suggests that it's not specifically a LW problem.
Also, what version of LW were you using before the problem started? Have you tried reverting back to an older version of LW to see what happens?

The problem might not necessarily be your ISP. You didn't tell us how your speed tests went versus the magnet link test.

The reason I wasn't sure about Platinum doing any throttling was that after reading the AUP, it suggested (to me) that they weren't monitoring bandwidth use. But...I might be completely wrong:wink:

I'm not sure the version i was On before. downloaded and bought apparently in december of 2005.. so whatever version was out then.. also, i have tried using bittorrent, and while it was slightly improved there (talking 20k/s) that's still ridiculously slow considering the number of 'peer's i was connected to. And, i have 5 full bars.. turbocharged connection it says. And awesome enough, despite downloading from 10 or 8 users.. my 2 files are at 0k/s each.. !! grr.

But yea, i called the guy at my ISP and he was quite knowledgable about everything.. since they apparently have other routers to keep their whole network up and running, can one assume they have firewalls in place at those points? or do you think they would turn of any excess firewalls? if they do.. i guess i'm screwed.. but if they don't, and i'm still having this problem, is it safe to say, make limewire use an http port? is that even allowed?

Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?
If yes then there's a firewall issue somewhere. What modem/router brand & model do you use?
What software firewalls do you have/use?

I've got no idea how your ISP would be set up with firewalls etc.
I've never used a proxy but have a look at the thread below, it has a few links. You could also use the forum search to look for proxy or proxies & see what other threads turn up.
Some other forum members might have a few more clues, as well.

Hmm.. yea.. proxies are definitely not my thing, don't understand what they are at all.. but I guess since I have no firewall icon, there shouldn't be anything blocking me down the line anywhere, my router is a Linksys WRT54G v6, and it is currently forwarding port 26316 as that is what limewire is using.

I've just installed Limewire, it installed the java for me too (online install) so I assume it installed the latest.

Downloads are proceeding at the lightning speed of 1kbps....and that with a 3.5mbps b'band connection.

So if anyone thinks I'm gonna pay $19 for Pro......!!!!

as for an update, its worsened itself now, now i connect, it'll start off the downloads around 1k/s, and then drop to 0k/s and never go up again this sucks bad
