I have just re-formatted my computer (Dell Dimension 4600) which had originally run bearshare lite just fine (about 1 mbps when it got going) but now my speeds will vary from 2 mbps to about 400 bps. It will be going stead, around 600 kbps which is fine, when it will jump down to just a couple. Any ideas? Thanks, -Rob

I've monitored it a bit, and it doesn't seem to be systematic. It'll be running fine for 1 minute one time, then drop the bps for a couple seconds, then back up... Or it might stay in the really low numbers the whole time. I'm not sure what it is, but I don't have anything running while it is, don't have any security, nor a firewall, or anything... It's just straight up. I wondered if it might have something to do with internet updates as I haven't yet been able to perform any since my system is 'invalid'. Could that affect it at all? I'm just trying to think of what I changed when I formatted.

There are some network settings you can tweak. Try this free utility to experiment with that.

Mega-Bad. If you have any 'traffic indicator' light on your modem or router, please observe it with you connected to your ISP but with you doing absolutely nothing... No browsing, no open browser apps... No e-mail... Nothing... Just be connected to your ISP... No keyboard or mouse activity... Nothing. And, after at least 30-45 minutes, check to see what 'activity' is shown by your modem/router. zombie 'infection' are an enormous problem and are very often not noted by so-called advanced anti-virus apps.
