A new company in Russia wants to be the MPAA's newest defense against bit torrent file-sharing.

From Slashdot:
The company doesn’t reveal how it works, but they appear to be flooding clients with fake information, masquerading as legitimate peers.
“We used a number of servers to make a connection to each and every P2P client that distributed this film. Then Pirate Pay sent specific traffic to confuse these clients about the real IP-addresses of other clients and to make them disconnect from each other,” Andrei Klimenko says.
The end result was that 44,845 transfers were successfully stopped. How many downloads slipped through, and whether the downloaders didn’t simply try again later is unknown. Pirate Pay don’t disclose their exact rates but say they charge between $12,000 and $50,000 depending on the scope of the project.
While Pirate Pay claim their technology is truly unique, it is not the first company to tackle BitTorrent piracy. The now defunct MediaDefender charged hundreds of thousands of dollars to attack BitTorrent trackers and upload fake torrent files. MediaDefender was rebranded to Peer Media, and under this brand they continue to offer these and other anit-piracy services.
Whether Pirate Pay is truly different and more effective than any of the other solutions remains to be seen. Even if it’s hugely effective, the scattered nature of BitTorrent makes it practically impossible to stop all infringing downloads of a movie, while the costs may outweigh the “losses” that are prevented.
Companies that really want to make pirates pay are probably better off investing in improvements to their legal offers.

Meanwhile, a cam copy of The Avengers enjoyed thousands of downloads during the week before its official theatre debut, when the movie had the biggest box-office in history. If all of those who downloaded the cam copy would have instead attended the opening, the receipts would have been increased by only 0.05%.

Box-office receipts suffer most when popular movies debut months apart in different countries. Some movies sit in the can for months before initial release, and it may be another year before it is shown in foreign theatres (some US-made movies are first released overseas).

1. The idea of this competition is to study the picture that is put up on this thread page and create a suitable, humorous 'caption' for it. Examples can usually be found below this post. Older winners can be found in the 2nd post of this thread.
2. The competition is judged by a panel of experienced forum members. The best ones win.
4. Each registered member is allowed a maximum of 3 entries per competition (if you do more than one on a post it still counts as multiple entries) Any more than 3 will either be removed/deleted or ignored.
5. All decisions about the winner are final & no feedback acceptable about the decision.
This Bonus category is presently holding 94 extra selective fun games. Many of these games are quite different to others in the arcade & some are a laugh just to play.
7. There also might be other 'awards' given for runners up or certain captions that were popular but didn't win. Only mods/VM's & image caption winners/runners-up have access to this Bonus Games category which is now divided into two special bonus categories. The category is normally hidden to all other members.

Merci d'avance.

Dangerous_Minds writes:
"Drew Wilson of ZeroPaid has an interesting look at file-sharing. It all started with a review of a Phoenix study that was used to promote SOPA. Wilson says that the study was long on wild claims and short on fact. While most writers would simply criticize the study and move on, Wilson took it a step further and looked in to what file-sharing studies have really been saying throughout the years. What he found was an impressive 19 of 20 studies not getting any coverage. He launched a large series detailing what these studies have to say on file-sharing. The first study suggests that file-sharing litigation was a failure. The second study said that p2p has no effect on music sales. The third study found that the RIAA suppresses innovation. The fourth study says that the MPAA has simply been trying to preserve its oligopoly. The fifth study says that even when one uses the methodology of one download means one lost sale, the losses amount to less than $2 per album. The studies, so far, are being posted on a daily basis and are certainly worth the read."

Comments on this article included many from people who claimed that p2p filesharing introduced them to music that they later purchased (i.e., p2p increased retail sales!). Others, like myself, said that no sales were lost due to p2p; we would not have paid for the items that we downloaded (we simply would have gone without).

Have just been trying to burn a rewriteable DVD but when I enter three pictures on it, that is, when I burn the three pictures on the dvd, I get a window telling me "Files ready to be Written to the CD".

My question: Why does it say "ready to be written" when they are already written on the DVD?

I burned another file (just one picture, that is) on the said DVD and it is listed under the subhead "Files currently on the CD."

My question: Why the difference in wording in these two messages when all the four files have been burned on the same DVD?

And why do the messages say "CD" when I am sure I am using a rewriteable DVD not a CD?

Many thks for helping an oldage pensioner.
And hey-presto, result, connected straight away.

Guys

I just seen the greatest super hero film ever and it is great (yes, great). It's the film I have been waiting for ever since my dad bought me a black & white reprint of a Fantastic Four comic in the sixties (back then you could only buy black & white reprints of Marvel Comics in the UK).

Watching "Avengers Assemble" is just like watching one of the best Avengers comic come to life, you had everything in the film that you would expect from Marvel. Heroes that start out not liking or trusting each other and so finding it difficult to work together.

Spoiler Alert:-

The heroes battling each other was a joy to behold, just what you would expect from Marvel.

End of Spoiler Alert:-

All I can say, without revealing the plot, is that if you like Marvel Comics or the Marvel films, i.e. Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, etc. then you will not fail to have a brilliant time watching "Avengers Assemble".

Right now, the film has been released in the UK (actually released yesterday) and it will not be released in the US until the 4th May, so guys get yourselves down to the big screen cinemas, with 3D if possible, and book your seats in advance and then treat yourselves to a fantastic Marvel super hero festival.

Finally, take no notice of the "nit-pickers" and "fault finders" because once the thrills start in this film it will take a pretty sad nerdy-type to find fault with this brilliantly spectacular film.

Now, I can't wait until the DVD comes out.

Hiya free friends,

I have developped some extensions of the Gnutella protocol which offer an XML common interface for upper level applications. The purpose is that P2P clients such as Phex, BearShare, Frosty allow not only to exchange files but also applications that can execute inside a virtual machine provided by the P2P clients. Applications may be written in Java or other language to determine.
This way, we will be able to create a P2P open cloud, which is not under the control of private monopolisitic companies or governments.
Does anyone want to go further with me in this P2P cloud concept based on Gnutella ?
