Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question

I suddenly couldn't get other p2p software to work. Bearshare/bearflix both allowed me to search but i couldn't get any connections. they both also had less files suddenly available (even no longer listing stuff that i'd recently downloaded). I tried limewire, which i used to use before finding bearshare. Same problem... nothing connects. I can search all i want, but download nothing. (btw, most the idiots on the lw forum are convinced that it's a fake file issue). I haven't tried frostwire yet, but shareaza works just fine. If suddenly all the gnutella networks started acting screwy, could it be an issue with the networks? it seems strange that all of the sudden, a whole bunch of people are all having the same problem with different software at the same time. I hadn't downloaded anything for several weeks, so my bs/bf problem may have been going on longer than i have realized. Any thoughts on this?

See Charter listed here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

We've been getting a lot of Charter customers coming here complaining of the same thing.

I have been having the same problem. I have tried multiple p2p software's and all end up the same. It always says "enabling open information sharing", and I can no longer download anything when I used to be able to a week ago. A few posts ago, someone mentioned they are going to fix the connection issues. Is this correct?

If you've been downlding & uploading heavily then perhaps your ISP has decided you're doing too much. I do know Cox does this on specific users. They are reknown for doing this; find them on the list here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

If you follow the directions earlier in this thread then it should work on condition that Cox is not shaping/blocking your use of FrostWire. There's a more thorough change to make to the file in question if you see et voila's Sticky thread near the top of this FrostWire forum section.

Ya, I have done everything the sticky's said, and that helped it connect, cause now I have full green bars, but it still says it cannot sources when I try to download and it still says "enabling open information sharing" at the top tool bar. I do have Cox, but I have only download about 20 things in about the 2 weeks I have had it, and I have a friends that have Cox and can still download. How can I find out if the block p2p on my ip? Thanks.

Not sure. Ask one of their techs if they're honest enough or knowledgable to tell you.

Enabling open info ... is normal. Everybody sees that.

See what happens when you download a magnet link from a site: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml

I cannot download anything of that site, whenever I try it says "firefox doesn't know how to open this address". Do I need to do something to fix this?

Ah ... you've tried several different p2p programs so probably neither LW or FW are the defaults to handle magnet links. LW 4.13 beta I think allows you to make a choice. But perhaps if Cox is doing the dirty deeds it's not worth bothering installing the beta.

I'll try it, just download LW 4.13 beta then try the magnet links? I don't think Cox has done anything yet, if nothing works I'll probably call then up and ask.

Okay, I downloaded limewire and was able to start downloading a link from the magnet site. What does this mean?

So what I got now, on frostwire I can search, but it shows I have a firewall up and on limewire I can search and it shows I have no firewall. But on both of them whenever I try to download something its always just says connecting or needs more sources...

So what happened with the magnet link? You said it started to downld. Did it stop or did you cancel it?

My guess is if you're getting a firewall with FW but not with LW, then they're both trying to access the same port in the same session. Change the listening port of one or the other. And even the connection port if possible. ie: temporarily turn UPnP off, change connection port & listening port to a high number. Then turn UPnP back on. I'm not sure if this will work but just a thought as an experiment. Since Upnp will tend to choose its own ports sometimes. You may need to restart the program for it to work. I'd suggest you do this for FrostWire since that's the one that's seeing the firewall.

The magnet link worked fine, it started to download but I canceled it. And thanks for the help so far, I'm gonna go try it out. Is there a certain number I should use for the listening port?

Okay, I just restored default on FW on now it shows no firewall, so now the only problem is I can't find any sources...

i checked with charter, and they said that they don't filter ports, nor do they monitor anything other than kiddie porn and the like. i tried LW again and downloaded several files at random. I downloaded my first try at an audio file and it worked swimmingly. when i tried to download several different video files, i only got one to work, and that was an adult file. I wonder if it's limewire that's the problem????? no one has mentioned if they are only unable to DL audio, video, etc.
