Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Nowadays sharing isn't the only way to contribute to the todays world of gnutella with ultrapeers. I see three different groups
  1. Users with slow connections
  2. Users with broadband connections
  3. Users with high speed connections (megabit symmetrical or more)
The first group has very limited amount of bandwidth. They should share only few files and open few upload slots. That will help them maintaining good upload success rate despite the poor connection speed.

Second group has two alternatives:
  1. Become an ultrapeer and don't share files. By maintaining large amount of leaf and peer connections will help everyone. It is okay to not share, you help the network by supporting leaves. It is important to left your client on your computer all the time. It is also important to reserve enough bandwidth to your client.
  2. Stay as leave and share plenty of files. You can reserve more of your upstream to uploads by staying as a leaf. You can serve fast uploads to people and you should have enough shared files to saturate your upload bandwidth.

Third group has enough bandwidth to share files and become an ultrapeer and serve leaves. You don't have to compromise anything.

So I think it is not bad if you don't share if you can run your client as ultrapeer.

I don't think that $700.00 - $1000.00 is cheap, plus subscription on $79.95-$120.00/month has come down like a Zeppelin. I talk to Satellite person and they have so intentions to lower their prices. Even a used Satellite system is around $400.00. And that is with modem (upload) and Satellite (download) and the subscription is at $39.95. Just now they have special 2 month for $29.95 and then up to $39.96.
But, thanks, for telling us that we with 56k modem are second-class members.
And I have seen in the last 3 weeks that more and more clients are cutting us out of the loop. So, Please people, Share with us, too. Yes, we are slow, but we have the heart to share with you, so share with us.
Remember that
p2p only work by sharing with everybody, even with a "slow" modem. And you others, that just downloading and never share, you are the parasite of p2p. You are not helping anyone but yourself, you are a selfish SOB.
If I had a DSL I world share all my MP3s (around 5000) with all of you. Just now I share around 150 - 350 MP3s, and I rotating them every week of the 5000 MP3s. And that is with my 56k modem.
I do all kind of works on my MP3 files, I putting in the album cover, lyrics and other info about the songs. Just now I trying to get the 192 and higher bit rates, on the same songs that I have. I ripping every CD I can get my hands on, from my girl friend to other friend.

Not to mention even if i kick them (after several minutes of them trying to put in my queue even MORE requestes) they still get priority over ppl just connecting. The solution i had to use - since there is no banning feature i can find in lime wire- i had to unshare my record of lodoss files. Why? because it was hellatiously annoying to see one user trying to do a billion downloads(- i had set a limit i thought 3 downloads at a time per person limit, was fine, but i get screenfulls of requests from certain ips, annoying, very). Sure he actually couldnt get more than 3- but screenfulls of requests- are ****y.
I ran into the same thing although all I share are mp3 files. A HUGE number of requests! (I'm using 2.5.5 and people can browse my files). Go to Options, then Advanced, and Preferences. That's where you can set your Freeloader choices. Personally, I feel like if a person is offering 500 files then they're serious about the concept of true file-sharing. ((The 500 is my only personal choice, your mileage may vary. )

I happen to live in an area that has no options for high bandwidth internet... do I'm stuck with the satellite down/2x56 modem up scenario... Modem(s) internal of satellite system that only cost me $100us out of the box! . As Peerless said, by your logic, I'd be insulting myself to call 56k users 'second class.'
You're pretty good at picking apart people's words...and inciting the horrible behavior that is on display in these forums.
Thanks for wiping the sparks off my back, Peerless!

I just so darn frustrated with people that is blocking out other people. And I think they are thinking that because they have great speed, that they do not have to except slow speeder like other and me. And in my vie, that make me think that we are consider "second class" down loader.
Before I moved up here I hade DSL and I shared everything with everybody hi or low speed. And as you know you can set the amount of file a user can download at one time, right. Even slow speeder has plenty of files to share.
I think that my frustration is coming out in my post, maybe to much. But I love you guys and girls and I hope this is not going to ruin this forums. And if I have insulted someone I apologize and ask for your forgiveness. But I think more people should complain about the refusal of slow speeder to download. And hopeful it will change...
I will dig up the sat system pricelist and company for you.

I think you're taking the whole 56K thing way too seriously. Sure, some people may kill them, but the majority don't. I could care less who downloads from me, as far as speed goes - however, while I try to stay up 24/7, I can't be held responsible for network outages that you might take as my having killed the connection. In addition, if I've recently recompiled my kernel and want to test it, I'm not going to wait 36 hours for an upload to complete - but that doesn't mean I killed the connection simply because it was from a 56k user.

very new here. In fact this is my first post.
I have been so fortunate to have been able to download lots of wonderful music and have no intention of not sharing but I don't know if i'm not allowing uploads. I did notice a couple early in the piece but I havn't seen much lately. Might of course, be the music I like....but if i'm doing something wrong...please let me know

before we start, don't ask questions on forums that are really old jsut make a new forum

free spirite to make shure your not doing anything wrong go in tools, options, sharing and add any folders which contain files that people might want. Also make shure the folder in savings and sharing is the same, savings is in options.

You might also want to click on the arrow of uploads and than click on the sub title basic in there you set how much bandwith you will devote to hots who try to upload files from you. you can also check share partially downloaded files under this subsection. go to the second subsection of uploads slots. there you write how many uploads you allow per hosts at the same time this is the first box, and in the second box you type how many uploads are allowed running at the same time.

to check if you are doing all this right go to tools, statistics and network. there beside the word hosts are your "points" or the difference between your downloads and uploads.

FreeSpirit, if you want to know if anybody is actually finding your files & considering them, go to your LW Library & click onto one of your shared folders. The column to the right called Hits will indicate how many people have seen each file. The Uplds column will tell you if anybody has dwnlded any of your files. Hope this helps!?

alright in allfairness sure i kill all 56k connections im like that i have faster than t1 and proud to pull major bandwidth
but i do only download from other cable or faster connections since i myself dont want to wait all day to get files from laggers. And to anyone who may have ever tried to download from my vast collection at 56k but couldnt because you live somewhere where cable is non existant then i am sorry. But for people that dont get a cable or dsl connection then i dont feal bad. Your free to look at my selection use my ip to get imformation about me and track down my aim screen name (pweetanax) and politly ask me to send you the song of your choice. but other then that i feal that yes 56-100k is second class and you shouldnt complain. And to the people who said they were patient and didnt whine i would gladly allow you to dl from me since my conenction is always open and my comp is never off maybe reset but never shut down. Forgive me for any bad gramer and such but i just dont care.
