Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default Underage Nudity Being Shared On The Gnutella Network - Porn and Laws

Hi,

While downloading normal porn I've seen some files that claim to be of underage models.

Since so many ppl on limewire go for this underage crap, it got me thinking. Is it illegal to have files of models under the age of 18?

I read some article about limewire and it sounded like the FBI was going after the people who made the underage movies, not just people who happened to have it on their computer.

Can anyone clarify this for me plz?

If you end up with Underage material on your computer you better errase it a.s.a.p. rather than binning it.
Spybot S&D has a errase function.
Just don't leave it on your harddrive, and especially NOT in your shared folder.
Downloading by accident is one thing, but having available for upload.........

Thanks for the advice but my question was about the legality of it. Is it possible for someone to get punished for having KP on their computer?

As you mentioned in your post it's possible to accidentally download such material. So I think it'd be dumb to punish someone just for HAVING it. I'm all for the FBI cracking down on the people who MADE it, but I think it'd be a waste of money to lock someone up just for watching a movie or looking at some pics...

Well it all depends on the law of the country where you live.
But in general posessing KP is illegal, no matter where you live.
The people that produce it are the worst offenders, helping to spread it makes you involved as well, and "just" having it on your computer well ..... perhaps you might get away with it in some countries......
But it sure doesn't give a healthy impression now would it ?

Dear LW Users

As far as UK law is concerned, possession of KP is illegal, distribution or any other reason doesn't come into it, if you are found in possession of this stuff then you are guilty of an offense.

So if you have accidentally downloaded this stuff, not files with false names, you delete it , and as suggested by RaaF, use Spybot or some other utility that can wipe this stuff off your hard disk because normal windows deletion will not be enough.

It would also be a good idea to filter out all adult material in your search in order to avoid anything that is too unpleasant.

And on a mac you'd use Secure Empty trash as compared to the normal routine. Or to make doubly sure a utility like norton's wipe info which gives you the option of wiping a folder or empty space to clear any traces of data.

In the USA yes it is. There are numerous States that have specific laws that cover this. For example in New Mexico you can receive a Life Sentence for having such material on your hard drive.

You will need to check your Local, State, or National Laws.

But personaly I think any one who has this type of material is a real sicko, and should get what they have coming.

In most countries it is, if not in all. In fact, last week there was an international band caught in different countries and all of them were jailed.

Ditto Australia, if you have kp on your computer you'll be charged with possession of kp; if anyone has uploaded it then you can add trafficking.

Again...

Again and again, it must be stated...

LimeWire has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the content of files shared within the Gnutella Network...
Neither does BearShare or Morpheus or ANY other Gnutella Network-based p2p 'client'.

Any comment(s) re: 'undesirable' material that may be distributed within the Gnutella Network will be absolutely incorrect if any specific client is named and/or 'accused'.

Default 'undesirable' material

I need to know whether or not using either Limewire or the Gnutella servers = can people put images/music on my server, or can they only download what I have on there?

In other words, is Limewire and Gnutella only for bandwidth and sharing, or are people actually going to start storing images and files on my computer? I want to make 100% people can't put files/images on my computer before I start using these programs.

A quick response would be appreciated!

Thanks.
P.J.

As Peerless said, no one can honestly put stuff on your computer because you use LW or any similar filesharing software.

I suppose viruses and the other malware he mentions might trick your machine into becoming a source of illegal files, but that has nothing to do with proper filesharing software. Email or Web browsing would be equally at risk if you have a Windows machine.

LimeWire only shares the files YOU decide,so carefully check your Library Pane to see if those are the files you approve.

For a more "official" statement, see the link on LW's home page called "Click Here for Important Information about Using P2P Software Safely" http://www.limewire.com/english/content/ftc.shtml

i had 2 friends that had kp on their machines but they did not put it their. one had files in the p2p shared dir and the other had files all over the place. their machines were running redhat like mine and redhat linux has a lot of holes if its not setup. if someone gets a hi user id by hacking a service like sendmail tftp telnet login or anoter service even apache they can pretty much do what they want on that machine. if files are put in a high trafc spot like a p2p shared dir, then the p2p app will begin sharing those files so it like a backdoor to a fileserver. our cUsers group has seen this a few. the other prob is with java on some p2p apps the java jvm that runs on the machine with the app can be vuln if its an older or oem vers. my shop machine was hacked thru telnet and java not the p2p. the p2p's are prety good overall.

Default Illegal Porn

here in the US, it is both illegal to possess, as well as selling, trading or any other venue of KP.....I was trying to find a movie myself (not porn) and damned if some kiddie porn came up of a 9 yr old having sex with an adult and what is worse, there were 39 users that had this same file on their pc....makes me sick to my stomach...anyway..back to the issue....it is illegal to own it in any form or shape...and no one wishes that I start on those that like to even watch it
