If you are new to the world of file sharing please do not be shy! Everyone was ‘new’ when they first started. When posting, please include details for: Your Operating System ....... Your version of your Gnutella Client ....... Your Internet connection (56K, Cable, DSL) ....... The exact error message, if one pops up Any other relevant information that you think may help ....... Try to make your post descriptive, specific, and clear so members can quickly and efficiently help you LimeWire and FrostWire users need to supply these details >>> System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) Moderators There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving. Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity) Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum. Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules. Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. 2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. 3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum. 4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks. 5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. 6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. 7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required. 8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning. 9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated.  Mac OS X: Installer woes Hello all Mac OS X users out there: I am running LimeWire 1.4 under Classic mode quite happily (though, it seems that under Classic or OS 9.0.4 LimeWire 1.4 freezes for no apparent reason after some time). I cannot get the OS X installer downloaded from www.limewire.com to work. It downloads successfully. Then, I move it into its own folder, open the terminal app and type ./LimeWireMacOSX.sh (permission denied) or sh LimeWireMacOSX.sh. Certain commands tell me I don't have the power (why people would ever enjoy a CLUI is beyond me (I've been a Mac USER since 1984... no typing for me  to run them. And, when I run sh Lime... it tells me directories not found plus a few other errors.[localhost:~] [localhost:~] erdunbar% ls Desktop Documents Library Movies Music Pictures Public Sites [localhost:~] erdunbar% cd desktop [localhost:~/desktop] erdunbar% cd lw [localhost:~/desktop/lw] erdunbar% ls LimeWireMacOSX.sh [localhost:~/desktop/lw] erdunbar% ./limewiremacosx.sh ./limewiremacosx.sh: Permission denied. [localhost:~/desktop/lw] erdunbar% sh limewiremacosx.sh Preparing to install... resolveLink: command not found: dirname [4] resolveLink: command not found: dirname [4] limewiremacosx.sh: command not found: dirname [895] limewiremacosx.sh: cd: no such file or directory: [895] limewiremacosx.sh: command not found: grep [930] [localhost:~/desktop/lw] erdunbar% I also downloaded the installer image but didn't find that a satisfactory solution as the program crashed and the settings were all funny. What to do? A request from the LimeWire programmers: please make an installer for OS X users that doesn't require UNIX knowledge. Granted, there are *nix geeks that came over from the darkside who love this typing stuff, but, the bulk of Mac users are command-line illiterate (we're not Windoze users afterall... well, ok, so they're OS illiterate too  ), including the early adopters coming from previous version of Mac OS.Once upon a blue moon I loved goofing off with UNIX commands when I had a mach UNIX account for e-mail and stuff. Now that there's a CLUI associated with my OS that's an entirely different story. Apple better do a better job of hiding the CLUI and making the permissions access problem disappear.  |

| yup... those are the steps that i took... and it worked the first time too! i basically have root priviliges with my login...eric, maybe you are using a login that doesn't have full priviliges?? also, remember that Unix is case sensitive.... type "sh LimeWireMacOSX.sh" and see if it makes a difference. you seemed to have typed all lower case letters. | Hmmm... I get the suspicious feeling you guys are *nix rather than Mac OS X. OS X isn't case sensitive as far as I can tell. I ran it both with correct capitalisation and without. What you see in my first post, is what I get!!!! (and, as far as I can tell, I'm following your instructions to the letter). I'm running in a so-called admin account (accounts and permissions have made OS X so complicated unless you become a programming expert). Is there an account greater than admin, and, if so, how do I change my OS to such a level? PS to Mac users out there: OS X 10.0.3 is still distinctly a beta OS... if you want a responsive computer, don't bother upgrading until OS X 10.1 or 10.5 is out... right now it's a *nix lover's paradise since it marries a sort-of-Ok interface (better than any of the Linux GUI's I've seen) with the innards of a UNIX). |

| Eric: yes there is a higher account level than "admin"...root you can temporarily become the "root" user....OS X automically makes the root's password the same password that YOU chose when installing OS X the first time... at the command prompt, just before attempting for the nth time the limewire install....type "su root". you'll be prompted for a password....you will now have temporary root access...until you close the terminal window in which you used "su root" i have no idea if that will help but it's worth a try... btw, are you sure OS X isn't case sensitive?? have you tried with the proper capitals?? just wondering because your error message seems to indicate that OS X isn't recognizing the file or directory ("no such file or directory"). maybe since it's looking for the proper capitals in the proper spots....come to think of it....even if OS X isn't case sensitive....maybe the installer program is...since it seems to be a Unix port....ahhh the beauty of OS X's unix kernel.....a LOT of software will be easily recompiled to run on our superior (at least to Windoze) OS!!!! It gave exactly the same errors. The errors seemed to be installer-related. As for the UNIX kernel... I want it so bad now (OS 9 crashed 3 x this morning whilst I was fiddling with a disk image)... if only they'd made the GUI Mac OS 9-like I'd've been ecstatic (and made the GUI responsive rather than as thick as molasses on a cold January morning)!!! PS if you can do a remote login to "root" with telnet/ftp services that's a beautiful security hole that could be exploited. Probably most people will, by default select no password on their main account (I certainly did and I will be livid if I ever have to use a password on my computer (I'm pissed off enough that Key-Chain under OS 9 doesn't work seemlessly but actually pops-up a password request the first time I try to access a network drive (and, of course, my keychain is not protected by password)). Thus, many a root login will not have a password on it  ... hehehehe... if so, Apple, you screwed up!!!Will try "su root" next time I feel like playing with OS X. Eric. |

Now I have to fire up the Terminal and type sh limewire to launch it. How do I write some sort of "program" to launch Limewire without having to fire up the Terminal (I've seen the instructions on how to create a Java app but I'd rather be familiar with writing something to launch Limewire)? | We are currently working on a new installer for OSX that will be released with LimeWire 1.4c or LimeWire 1.5. The new installer is much easier to use, and is similar to other traditional Mac installers. I posted on other threads that the new version would be released last week, but we have delayed it for several reasons (including putting the finishing touches on the OSX installer). It should be out sometime in the next several weeks, however (I want to avoid sticking to an exact date in case anything comes up). The new version of LimeWire for OSX will also be a much smaller download, probably under 1 MB.
