I am trying to add blocklist protection to my current version of Limewire Pro 4.8.1 (see my sig for all details of my computer system and network set-up. Please read all details at link in my sig).

I am on an older version of Mac OS X, 10.2.8. I looked at PeerGuardian, but you have to have 10.4.9 to run it.

Is there a source for plain text blocklist(s) that I could copy/paste into Limewire/Preferences/Filters/Hosts/Filter Hosts/ by hand? I need to protect myself from viruses/malware and also cut down on spam. Almost all of my results are spam these days, and I don't trust the sources to whom I am connecting.

The options I have explored so far are:

1. PhoenixLabs' PeerGuardian (requires 10.4.9 to run it; I am not upgrading my OS for various reasons);

2. Looked at Bluetack B.I.S.S. Forums at their Blocklist Manager, but it appears to work in conjunction with software programs like PeerGuardian;

3. Looked at their related BlocklistPro website. I could not easily ascertain Mac versions of their blocklist downloads, and was not sure if they only work within compatible software programs or if they can be used as stand-alone, plain text blocklists.

I am looking for plain text versions of blocklists, such as the ones described on this page: IP Blocking & Blocklists | THE source for BitTorrent & P2P Tips, Tricks and Info. | FileShareFreak Ideally, I would like the equivalents of:

1. The P2P.php list within the PG 2 program (installed automatically with PeerGuardian).
2. The Bluetack P2P Level 1 list.
3. The Bluetack BOGON list.

There is also Hostiles List which can simply be added to the LW preferences folder. However I'm not sure if it is compatible with 4.8.1, edit: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/263954-post9.html

You could at least use those ip's to block manually.

BTW LW 4.8.1 was my favorite version for a long time, IMHO better than versions up to at least 4.12 or perhaps 4.14.

May I ask at what point you decided to switch versions?

Am wondering if Limewire has perhaps added this feature to a more current version as a default. It surely would be nice to see this built-in.

Judging by AW's comment in the link above & discussions around that time, earlier LW versions (earlier than 4.13) would not recognise/read the list as a document in the preferences folder. However, that's not to say you could not add the lists to the LW preferences in any case. The LW preferences will have a banned host list for those hosts we manually banned, so you could arguably manually add them to that part of the preferences document. I'd need to experiment to check which document that is. For LW 4.16 that document is limewire.props, you will see a heading called BLACK_LISTED_IP_ADDRESSES perhaps 15-20% way down the document. Almost all LW preference documents can be opened using TextEdit if you drag & drop them onto the textedit icon in dock. (Of course can be saved too.)

Re: Bluetack, in that link you gave, there's considerable argument against at least one of those lists due to ip's being added & rarely if not never rechecked. These spammers frequently use dynamic ip addresses of course. And it was reported to me by one of the gnutella program devs that ip's of several innocent people including themselves were found within. He said they stopped using bluetack for their spam control.

LW 5 has its own filter list of so-called known ip spam addresses. The user does have the option to use it or not. Not sure if the list is built in or within the preferences. I queried about this ... didn't receive a clear answer.

I did like 'some' of the things LW 4.13 did & some improvements. I eventually started using LW 4.14 up until I stopped using my G4 for p2p a year ago. Changes in LW versions can be seen here http://wiki.limewire.org/index.php?title=Changelog. My G4 was a 733, oh .. you can see in my profile was similar to yours but a tad slower. Like my new computer, my G4 had two bootable OSX drives. On G4 it was OSX 10.3 & 4, oh & OS 9 of course.
