Quality Column - Spoof "File downloaded" tick?

Yep - title of this post does sound bizarre - but hey, it got you reading right?
Apologies if this topic is actually covered elsewhere in the forums - I had no idea what the hell to search for to try and find out!

Just interested to know if anyone else has noticed that whatever file they search for - at least audio files - almost 100% of the time you get a file at, or very near the top of the results with the "Tick" on a white page icon - In the "Quality" column

Sorry - Am a new user & not sure exactly what this indicates - but assume it means a file that you've already d/l or have in your shared LW folder. (Some of these results do make sense, 'cos it is a file I've already got)
What I've noticed is that this frequently shows when it's a file I've not d/l or even have on PC in any folder.
Just in fact searched for a track by a band I've never even heard before - let alone possess any tracks by - Sure enough 1st result is tickbox in quality col' and showing as being available from multiple hosts in the # column - this seems to be another feature of this spoof - or whatever it is!

Would I be right in thinking this is some kind of spoofing technique used by the t*@%'s that use LW to spread viruses, spam, etc?
More importantly, Is there any easy way of blocking these results? - File sizes and formats always appear as expected, and the actual filenames aren't the obvious "freeclub" or "Really rare track" type bollox so isn't really obvious that they're not genuine results - except for this Quality Column strangeitude (As the Ozrics would say)

If this is total nonsense at least I'll get rid of the nag msg about making my 1st post if nothing else!

Cheers

Usually files of same content but different name are seen by LW as having been downloaded before (has same download hash details). People re-name files for whatever reason, correctly or incorrectly, etc.

There is a chance you have downloaded such a file & deleted it later.

If you are sure you haven't downloaded some of those that are showing a tick, it may be a bug in LW.

Possible bug in LW?

Thanks for quick response - Understand what you mean about naming of files and possibility of not realising you've previously d/l certain files.

Am absolutely sure I haven't d/l some of these files before - the files that are showing these false "file completed" always seem to be .wma format - which I've noticed also seems to be same extension used by the notorious 119.kb & the other known dodgy file sizes.

Another common feature of these "files" also seems to be no entry in the "Bitrate" column - it's just blank.

Really interested to know if other users are noticing this or not - have only ever d/l audio files so far, so don't know if other types are effected or not.

No bit rate does suggest fakes. I normally filter out wm files myself. And most files under 2 MB I give the junk tag to.
To filter out certain extensions ... go to Tools > Options > Filters > Keywords. For example, add .wm
Oh and on the idea of filtering, see some pointers here How to find music & also Direct instructions to eliminate porn from results

(There are some gnutella clients who share audio files that for some reason sometimes don't show bit rate .... I can't remember which clients .. shareaza or morpheus, etc.)

It might be worth adding this to your LW: Hostiles List so it helps filter out known spam ip's. This list needs to be kept up to date btw so renew it occasionally. ;) See if it helps or not. :)

Thanks for the tips........

Thanks for the pointers - had found & used the "hostiles" list - now subs to thread to make sure of updates.

One other thing that these files seem to have in common is the "Browse Host" button is always greyed out as well - Is this just an indication that users have just deliberately not enabled sharing in Options/Sharing ?
Or would these users files not actually show up in a search? (Guess that makes more sense!)

Hope this makes some kinda sense - Haven't developed a LW variety of OCD about these files, just interested to learn more about the possibilities.
