LW5 won't connect - blocked by Motorola SBG900 wireless router settings

Hello,
I'm new to LW. Just downloaded. I can connect when using a WiFi hotspot. I can connect when I have set my WiFi router firewall settings to "None", but every other setting seems to block Limeware's ability to connect. I don't want to run with the firewall rules turned off.
I have checked out some other threads and tried some suggestions with no luck. I have tried changing the "Listening" port to various others (65000, 4268, 8945) - no luck. I did see a thread that suggested some "Port Forwarding" changes to this model router but I don't understand them and don't really want to set a static IP. As LW says in the "Really Super Advanced" menu, don't play with these settings if you don't know what you are doing. I also don't really know about firewall changes for my router.

Can anyone help with any suggestions?

The SBG900 firewall "Blocking" log implies a "Default Defense" reason for the error and says "No port filter policy has been defined for this packet and the firewall is blocking the packet by default".

Note: The Tools > Advanced Tools> Connection screen says I am behind a firewall.

My details:
LW 5.3.6.
Vista Home Premium SP2
Internet Explorer 8
Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010
Motorola SBG900 wireless router
HP high end laptop
Bigpond Cable Broadband (up to 8MB/s) - Australia

Lastly, I am able to connect with Trend Micro turned on, including the software firewall, so TMIS does not seem to be the problem.:)

It doesn't look like your router supports UPnP so port forwarding might be your best option for connecting.

Setting up a static IP address isn't a drama - it's not a static IP provided by your ISP but rather one that you set up so that your router can recognise your computer. The process looks a bit complicated when you first read it, but providing you go take your time & go through the steps carefully they you shouldn't have a problem :)

Have a read through the info here.

Failed static IP setup

Birdy,
Thanks for the response and suggestions. I was all set to set up the static IP and then set up port forwarding on the router but fell over at step 1 - static IP. I have attached a zipfile with 3 files. One showing a section of my "ipconfig/all", one showing an error message I got after trying to set up the static IP (192.168.0.10), and also a section off the Bigpond ISP help page which supposedly lists the IP addresses of the DNS servers. I think they are wrong as I am in South Australia but the "ipconfig/all" output has a different address for the secondary DNS server. Note that I tried both sets of IPs for the DNS servers and got the same error message and the Internet connection dropped out immediately.

Note also that I used a mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1.

Is there any problem with trying the set up a static IP on Bigpond broadband cable? I did call Bigpond Tech Support to check the DNS server IP addresses and when I mentioned the term "Static IP" he said I can't do that on cable. Maybe he was talking about something else.

Any thoughts? Am I doing something wrong?:sos:

Hi bjay51,

I'm not sure about why you're seeing the WA DNS server number. I'm also not sure about why there's a problem setting up a static IP address with a cable connection:confused:

One of the mods here used to have cable with BP & I'm pretty sure that she had port forwarding set up at that time. But I'm not sure which router she was using though. I've asked her if she ever had any probs & will let you know what she says.

Go through the steps for setting up a static IP (don't have to change any settings - just need to get to the TCP/IP page!) & get to the stage where you've gone to TCP/IP > Properties. Now on the Properties page, click on Advanced.
Once the Advanced page comes up, don't click or change anything but just have a look at the Default Gateways section - is there more than one listed?

Here are a couple of links I found regarding your router & possibly similar problems. Just have a read & see if they make sense to you.

I don't know whether you want to try those kind of fixes. If not, try another gnutella client & see whether you can connect :) Check the links below.
