Loading Programs for Mac

INTRODUCTION (I have used LW on several occasions downloading audio, but this is my first attempt at downloading a program, I use a Mac B/W PPC with OS X 10.4.11 and am using LW 4.12. I am looking forward to using this forum as a tool to better understand ins and outs of Limewire)

MY PROBLEM :(: I have downloaded several programs through Limewire. Upon completion of the download, Limewire places a file folder folder on my desktop with the name of the program I downloaded. Double clicking on this folder roduces aother folder which when double clicked produces three files in the folder, whichare labeled as id.diz, patch.exe and img.nfo, which I assume is the installer program and any other pertinent info When googling these extensions, I find that these are normally PC extensions and Mac cannot interpret them without a conversion program. Is this common? I do not have a PC convrter on my Mac, so I can run PC programs on my Mac and donot plan on getting one until I purchase a new computer. Am I missing something and I hope I am addressing the correct forum group

for one thing, using any programs found on the gnutella network is playing with fire....

secondly, yep you do need specific programs for a Mac....perhaps searching for them is in order?...again, programs are dicey business as they are many times infected with virii/trojans or are incomplete or are simply fake...

I agree totally with Peerless, gnutella network is not best place to obtain programs. Mac programs will either have .dmg or .zip extension & usually the file name will say for OSX or Mac. So if you search, put either or both OSX & Mac in the search title. Searching .dmg can often bring about some good results. But still, most likely there will be spam mixed in.

Whilst LW 4.12 was a good version, it will not be able to download from other LW users with versions from 4.17 to version 5. Thus you would lose out on a portion of the available network. LW 4.16 however would be fine to use to access the later users at this point.

For seeking programs, I imagine torrents are probably the better source.

BTW to run windows on mac, I'd recommend Parallels, a program that can run Windows operating system on it. I have it set up with two Windows XP's & one Windows 2000 (though it does not officially support Win 2k). Parallels is faster than the other virtual windows. This also saves you rebooting to boot up into windows. Files are draggable between Parallels' window & Mac. I tried Mac's BootCamp but the windows installation kept corrupting & I gave up. Parallels is far more convenient in any case.
