regarding firewall and port-forwarding

hi,
I'm using gtk-gnutella on an adsl connection. i have a static ip address and have a 4-port billion5100 switch with 4 computers on LAN ... gtk-gnutella's gnutellaNet window tries to connect to various hosts but keeps failing ...
i have read the FAQ and have set up port forwarding on my adsl .. but its still not working.

i really want to use this software . please let me know how to fix it.

thanks in advance.

re: firewall

you're never going to get an answer from these guys. they have "firewall" confused with "port blocker" and don't even seem to know what an actual firewall is.

nevertheless you should be able to connect marginally, though your ability to download will be extremely limited. (AFAIK, kazaa is the only program which works well with firewalls, though it's completely by accident on their part.)

try connecting one of the workstations directly to the adsl router. if this doesn't work, the adsl router itself will have to be reconfigured.

if it does work, then you don't need a separate machine for a firewall - the adsl router may function as a firewall itself. just connect the adsl router directly to the switch.

thanx buddy ... i'll give it a shot ... i was successfully using kazaa thru wine but wine was hogging a lot of resources .. just wanted to try gnutella once ...

Look up "shorewall", nice easy to use firewall.

I find these rules allow Gtk-Gnutella to connect and work fine
Code:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 6346 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 6346 -j ACCEPT

6346 is the default port for the gnutella network but you can choose a different port, just make sure you select the right port on the network tab in Gtk-Gnutella

You need to check that your port forwarding is working through your router and your own pc's firewall.
You could probably have a friend outside try to telnet into your ip / port and see what happens. Gnutella should print something when you connect. Or at least he shouldn't get a refusal.

Just connecting to other hosts for network packets is not enough, most other people are firewalled so you won't be able to get many files unless your port forwarding is working.
