Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

I decided to open the console before it crashed & save a report covering a few mins. Do you want to see any of it & if so, how much of it?

LW is now extremely sluggish, getting spinning beach ball trying to change view mode or other things for eg.

At present:
Threads=2,364 (increasing sharply!)
RAM=538 MB
VM=2.14 GB

Edit: I just got a couple of internal errors. Lost connection ... error of Potential dud connection in console report.
Ram=525
T=2,451
VM=2.18

Doesn't seem to be able to reconnect! Trying for several mins.

I gave up, LW refused to reconnect. It had used 2.20 GB VM.
I noticed there were around 1,500 listed as Upload capacity reached in my monitor window & the usual queued & uplder at 0. lol Was able to reconnect after re-opening.

So I guess LW reaches a point of no return re: Java on OSX.

BTW whatever happened to the days of files continuing on their own (find their own sources after LW starts)?

Memory doesn't surprise me, but 2000 threads???! Never seen that so far.

CPU% is much better with 4.10.9

I downloaded a couple of 600+MB files and I get like 80MB RAM and 490MB of VM between 28 and 80 threads, CPU usage is between 4-9% on 1.2Ghz iBook, Osx 10.4.5 java 1.5.0-5 with LW 4.10.9 as a leaf.

Very good so far, no easy bug or whatsoever to ***** about....

In fact I like 4.10.9, IMO downloads and uploads should be NIO to decrease, but...

Ciao

Uploads & downoads (downloads first, probably) will be using NIO eventually.

Well if et voilà & Stief leave their system running 24+ hrs after downlding large & small files, ... then after a break do more searches .. perhaps some more junk filtering also ... & don't suffer the same java breakdown then it must be just my system. I thought I was doing well with Java 1.5 with an older LW version, but come 4.10 it seems a different story. Like the one I knew before the OSX upgrade if not worse. I didn't suffer internal errors before. Let alone inability to reconnect.

I guess I could trial out 4.10.0 again to see how Java 1.5 handles it compared to 1.4.2 in Panther. As documented in Jum's thread.

I don't run an imac. Is that the difference or is it the processor or general overall different mapology of newer G5's?

I don't mind beta testing if it's of any constructiveness for the proggies. But if I have a query, it would be helpful to me if I could get some type of answer. I don't know whether my reporting is constructive or just an ink blot on the page.

Ok perhaps I should delete my LW prefs, & change downld location to give it a total fresh approach. BTW how do we separate the section icons & figs at the bottom of the interface so we can know exactly how many files we're sharing? All I get is an ... as the sample image shows ... is that 37 tens or 3.7 thousands (or 370 k files)?

lotr
rather than changing location, etc, just install in a new admin account (then you don't have to worry about old prefs, etc).

I can run LW for about three days (as an UP), but when the system gets sluggish and the beachball starts working, then I know it's time to shutdown for two minutes to clear the VM. I also keep the incomplete folder purged as much as possible, and hide LW overnight. This really didn't change much whether it was with a G3, G4 and all the various OS X flavours.

re feedback in the beta threads: feedback is rare, but sure is nice when it shows. I think of the feedback as a bulletin board rather than a conversation.

More than fair enough comments! I'm a person who normally runs with a high no. of incompletes which no doubt contributed to my previous success of LW restarting incompletes without assistance.

What I had started to do just now would in effect start a new, fresh downld account if you like. But you're probably right, a new account will be without the intrusion of other program prefs, background running, etc. I will do this ... just the pia of relogging, blah blah .... When it shuts down all other operations.

If you hover over the number of shared files it should show a tooltip with the right number.

If you see a high # of threads again, could you get a full stack trace from the console log? You have to be running Java 1.5 to get it, so if that's possible that'd be good.

I did save 2-3 stack traces afaik if I did it right (6 altogether), reports of several mins of running last time. If you want to see them just ask. But I'll check in a new account & see how things go & see if it happens again. It will be a virgin downld space except for shares

I 1st need to finish using another app before I can log out though.

' "Full" stack traces ', what do you mean by full. I'd have thought about 20 hrs of running with stack trace on all the time would be somewhat over-sized. Yesterday I saved reports at intervals (1st two 9 & 10 hrs before) notably over the last period; 4 over 25 mins with each the equivalent of 15-16 A4 pages in Word (just to get a measure of the size.) The last 2 LW was not connected. I think the loss of connection happened during the 2nd last one (I'm not sure.) How to send them?

By full, I mean the ones from the console tab when choosing 'save' if you're running Java 1.5 or higher. The resulting file should include stack traces of every thread the program knows about. For now, just a single one of those when the program has this high number of threads should be fine. You're welcome to post it here as an attachment or mail it to this username @limepeer.com.

I'm not so much interested in the loss of connections right now as I am the 2000+ threads. The stack traces won't be too helpful to me for the loss of connections.

As a furter data point to the memory consumption on OS X: if you do not have any search tabs open and do just your queued downloads and uploads as searches come in everything is fine. As soon as I have a search tab open (even if it is not searching any more) the mem consumption goes up all the time and LimeWire will eventually crash due to the machine going out of memory.

well well well! Thanks for the tip--I'll give that a try this weekend. Might this then be "fixable" without Apple's help?

Possible problematic points:

search panel on the left
filter boxes on the left
search results table
downloads table

any chance you could muck around and see which one of those is causing the problems?

thanks.
