Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question WMA or MP3

I am trying to get my own compositions onto Limewire but they are all on the WMA format and not MP3. Will that make a difference with regards to anyone who wants to download one or more of my tracks ?
I have since copied all my WMA files to mp3 (not replaced, just copied) but none of the mp3 files are showing up in my Limewire library. Why is this ?

we generally advise ppl to avoid that format...for various reasons...simply take the time to covert the files from their .wav format to high bitrate mp3 format..

ppl = people
.wav is the uncompressed format of an audio file...

example: a .wav format of one of my songs is about 45MB for a 3:30 file, compressed to mp3 @ 320kb/s bitrate its about 8MB

Yes, I have all my own compositions on both WMA and mp3 and in my 'Shared Music' folder and my 'My Music' folder. Both of which are open for sharing. Update - now all my mp3 files (i.e. my own compositions) are in the Library but all are in red lettering. Any ideas ?

So that's where all your limewire files are stored...
Sorry to be a pain but just checking all options...

I am guessing that you mean converted the wma files. It would really be better to rip the original music again. Converting a lossy format to another is not really that effective.

That's why peerless mentioned the wav files, which are lossless

Incase your don't have better copies than wma, then take this as a learning experience.

There are BTW forums that discuss this keeping quality preserved while making music.

If this is electronica or similar that you are making, one comes to mind http://www.sectionz.com/home.asp It's a site for unknown musicians. It is possible to get a lot of tips there regarding the whole process from start to finished project.

Also you can upload samples to the site in Mpeg format

Thumbs up To Peerless

What are lossless files ? As for the red lettering, I managed to solve that simply by going to Limewire Library, clicking onto song and selecting 'start sharing file'. Thanks for your help. Oh and I ripped the music again and now I have both WMA and Mp3 versions of my songs. Would I be correct in saying there should'nt be a problem for anyone with that ?

I'm not Peerless, but I can answer that for ya

Lossless simply means that the file doesn't lose quality

E.g. you rip a CD to .wav and then burn the .wav to CD again then you get an exact copy of the first CD (This off course depends a bit on the quality of ripping and burning equipment)

If you make rip a CD and convert it to .mp3 or .wma format, and then burn a cd from that format, then you lose a bit of quality.

BTW you still haven't mentioned what kind of music it is.

There should not be a problem with having both mp3 and wma files, then you give people a choice. I'm guessing that you will soon find that the mp3 ones are more popular.

Also rip them at high bitrate (320 kbps)

If you want to share perfect quality then share the .wav files or convert the .wav files to FLAC (level 8) (takes up less space but is just a good)

BTW FLAC is free and open source. (FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec)

Download FLAC (Link)

Smile To Sleepless

Sorry, but the above message was meant for you rather than 'Peerless' but what's the difference eh ? Who or what is BTW ? As for the music, well, all the music has been 'created' using 'music maker' type discs (or games) for use with games consoles. Does that make the music rubbish ? Not necessarily so I think. It still takes imagination to gleam a lot from limited resources. The music is a bit Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, William Orbit, Black Sabbath and a lot more depending on the song, even some reggae and Acid Jazz. Laughable ? Who gives a ....

BTW = By the way, as in note: or I almost forgot

And actually many give a ....

If the samples have noticable traces of copyright material on them then Sectionz is not an option for uploading to. But you can probably get good advice there on how to keep quality as intact as possible.

Many people are very quality concious and will not keep tracks they download, which they do not feel are high quality.

You asked we answered.

Could you PM me your IP+portnumber for direct connect and some filenames, then I could check them out and maybe help you share them.

Sorry but I know next to nothing about computer jargon. What is PM ? Also I don't even know what my IP+portnumber is. If you want some filenames (do you mean the names of my songs ?) then can I suggest looking for them through Limewire Pro under the name Garry Rowe, failing that search for 'Ivor Cutler' (audio) or Pink Floyd's 'Jugband Blues', 'Set the controls for the heart of the sun' or 'Scarecrow' (video) then 'browse host' until you find Garry Rowe. Sorry if that's not very helpful.
BTW you can also search for Frank Marino (Don Kirshner Concert - 1975) on video, AC/DC-Baby please don't go (video) and Wolfmother video's.

Tried to find you, no luck. Are you sure that you are set up right?

PM = Personal Message. Click on my username and choose send personal message. Posting IPs in the public forum is not allowed and also any hacker will see it there.

To find your IP (If you are set up right for sharing) press the Direct Connect tab under where you put your search criterias.

It will either tell you your IP+Portnumber or it will say 'you are behind a firewall'

This is a good way to check your connection too, because if it says that you are behind a firewall, then people may not have full access to what you share
