How do I increase Download Speeds?

I cant figure out how to get my Download speeds up! I Have DSL and my computer has a 2.8 GHz Processor and 536 Mb RAM which DEFINETLY doesnt make it slower. the download speeds never go above 15 KB/s overall, even if its just LimeWire on. WHAT DO I DO!!! (yes i do have my download speed set to unlimited)

birdy August 5th, 2006 12:18 AM

What's your speed though?? Do a speed test & see
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?more=1

Download speed depends on your speed, your hosts' speed, how many hosts you're downloading from, how you have your LW set up etc etc;)
Have a look through this thread for good tips to optimise LW's performance

How do you find out your upload speed and your download speed??

i'm relatively new to limewire and it has not been working well and i read how to tweak limewire to make it perform better but i do not know how to find out what my upload and download speed is. Thanks a lot to anyone who replies. Very appreciated.

Dreamtech August 14th, 2006 01:28 AM

depends on your internet connection.

wondering why August 14th, 2006 01:41 AM

bwind...
Birdy has provided a link to a speedtest, that will tell you what your download and upload speeds are....;)

There is a chance that your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is throttling P2P Traffic

Who is your ISP ?

beavis26 August 18th, 2006 10:57 PM

is bellsouth throttling p2p traffic

birdy August 18th, 2006 11:06 PM

Use Google to search for BellSouth - traffic shaping or BellSouth p2p... see if you find any useful info.

If you have suspicions that they might be shaping... call their help desk & ask.

beavis26 August 18th, 2006 11:15 PM

i dont know if im looking in the right place but i cant tell if they r or not

birdy August 18th, 2006 11:20 PM

What makes you think they might be? Have you had a drop in download speeds recently (or some other symptoms)?

beavis26 August 18th, 2006 11:30 PM

the only problem i have with limewire is search results when i was on dial up i got tons of results now i have dsl and and with the same keywords i dont get many results at all and i got a brick wall on the globe dont know if that means anything

birdy August 18th, 2006 11:54 PM

The brick wall means that LW's detecting a firewall. It could be a software firewall not configured properly or it could be an internal firewall within a modem/router. This can effect your searches & downloads & it will definitely effect other people downloading from you.

Double check that the XP firewall's configured properly
Firewall setup

You could port forward through your modem, chances are that this would get rid of the firewall problem. Once you've followed the instructions for port forwarding
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm
you'll have to choose the 'manual port forward' option in LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Make sure that you enter the same port number as LW's listening port & apply to save the change.

There's a lot of good info here about setting up LW for best performance
Configuring LW for best performance

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 12:10 AM

i did all that and the brickwall is still there i have a dynamic ip adress is that what is wrong

birdy August 19th, 2006 12:22 AM

It could be but there's no prompt in the instructions for your modem to set up a static IP. Normally you'd set up a static IP & then go on to forward a port but the portforward site usually includes a prompt to set up that static IP.

I've had a look through those instructions & I can't see anywhere to enter your static IP even if you had set one up.

You might be able to find out from Westell's tech support site?
http://www.westell.com/pages/support/dropdown.jsp

Otherwise, someone else on the forum might have more clues?

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 12:30 AM

i cant figure it out thank u for ur help

birdy August 19th, 2006 12:34 AM

I'll ask around & see if anyone else has any idea!

wondering why August 19th, 2006 12:39 AM

You dont seem to need a static IP for this one, going on what the guidelines say...
beavis26 are you entering the exact same Port number into all 3 boxes for Lime 1 and Lime 2...

wondering why August 19th, 2006 12:41 AM

Oh and dont forget to have the same number entered in the manual port forward and listen port boxes on the limewire page...;)

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 12:42 AM

yes all the boxes have the same number

wondering why August 19th, 2006 12:44 AM

May I ask what number you have chosen...

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 12:57 AM

37291

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:04 AM

Ok, try this one 12020...Make sure you enter that number in every box that has to have a number entered...Even this one: LimeWire's Port for incoming connections....
Make sure Limew 1 is set for TCP and Limew 2 is set for UDP...
Make sure in Limewire itself you enter 12020 in the manual port forward box and 12020 in the listen box...
Make sure you select Limewire in the drop down box at the end and enable it...
After all that is done shut the comp down and see when you start up Limewire again if the wall has gone...;)

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:23 AM

ok i did all that and its still there where is the option for limewires port for incoming connections

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:26 AM

Attachment 2741

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:31 AM

i did all of that and its still there

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:34 AM

Did you do this bit, it should of appeared after the TCP UDP boxes...
You should see another page of settings that need to be entered into one of the blank lines on your routers Port Range page. Go ahead and enter those settings and then click Next then Close.

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:38 AM

ok when i port foward on my dsl modem when i go to enable the limew1 and lime 2 i get a pop up that say click ok for host or cancel for dynamic host=will allow incoming connections on a designated pc dynamic=will only allow outgoing connections on a designated pc thats what it says

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:41 AM

hmmmm, which one have you tried....

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:47 AM

i clicked cancel for the dynamic but if i click ok it goes to another page and ask for an ip address

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:50 AM

Ok so it doesn't work for the dynamic, so click ok and enter your IP addy into it...I'm just guessing here, but it might work...

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:54 AM

i got it yay i clicked ok and then done and it worked the brick wall is gone thank u so much for ur help

wondering why August 19th, 2006 01:56 AM

Yay, we rock lol...:D
Good on you and happy downloading...:)

beavis26 August 19th, 2006 01:58 AM

Hello all i was wondering if anyone can give me the proper settings on the downloads and uploads my connections is dl speed is averaging 4900 kbps and ul is 344.Ive done alot of readin and got the ul set at around 29 and dl is set at 100% bandwith with 7 max downloads..Im on cable modem (roadrunner) Does this sound correct?thx for the replies!!

wondering why August 1st, 2007 06:07 PM

You could put your upload speed to about 40kB/s and leave your download speed at 100%...
Try having 5 upload spots with maybe 3 files per spot...

How to increase download speed

Nice post. Thanks for sharing.
You may try this free Download Accelerator to increase the download speed. cheers.

You should try this, This is often the most powerful one. Turn off your modem for one minute and turn it on again. It is called power cycling and can often flush out a bunch of problems that affect your speed.
