If you are new to the world of file sharing please do not be shy! Everyone was ‘new’ when they first started. When posting, please include details for: Your Operating System ....... Your version of your Gnutella Client (* this is important for helping solve problems) ....... Your Internet connection (56K, Cable, DSL) ....... The exact error message, if one pops up Any other relevant information that you think may help ....... Try to make your post descriptive, specific, and clear so members can quickly and efficiently help you. To aid helpers in solving download/upload problems, LimeWire and Frostwire users must specify whether they are downloading a torrent file or a file from the Gnutella network. Members need to supply these details >>> System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) Moderators There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving. Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity) Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum. Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules. Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem. 7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required. 8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning. 9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online. 10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents. 11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection. 12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban. 13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts. 14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.  to ultrapeer or not to ultrapeer? ok so i get it i can help the community by donating my connection speed and stability to those less fortunate than I and thus make it possible for more users to get on and share and search if i were to ultra peer. but what benefits does the ultrapeer get? other than those mentioned above. It seems as tho it would be better to be a leaf and keep all your bw. But is there a direct benefit i am missing for the ultrapeer? there are times i need every bit of bw i have between downloads ups and regular internet tasks and im not sure if its always best for me to ultrapeer. thanks in advance for your insight. --ummm  |

| The later developed programs like LimeWire, Phex, GTK-Gnutella tend to use less over-head when running as ultrapeer. I think this is because they compress the messages sent to and from other clients that can also receive and send compressed messages, thus less bandwidth used. There's probably other reasons also. I think the standard ultrapeer bandwidth is between 5 to 10 KB/s for the above mentioned programs, perhaps a fraction more. Depends upon your overall bandwidth abilities I guess. I only have modest upload capacities since most standard ADSL2 upload abilities in my country are not especially high. Yet I choose to run as ultrapeer quite often. Some years ago I deliberately did not run as ultrapeer due to similar bandwidth concerns as you. I was only on ADSL1. In the past, some people might have advised one or the other depending upon which way you wished to help the network the most (unless you had a very good upload ability.) But these days I think it is more dependent on your client and your bandwidth abilities and how popular your files usually are. My personal advice would be not to worry too much about it. If you have 50 KB/s or higher upload capability, I think you can safely be a large'ish sharer and an ultrapeer. Off-topic: If you wanted to attract attention to any particular shares. There's a few ways to do it. One is via file description (if it is not an audio file.) Another is to do searches of the same topic of your shares. This brings you in contact with those also seeking such similar file topics. A tip I picked up from experience.  |

And when I connect as UP, my search results sometimes seem to be better. So I'd say that there is a benefit to connecting as UP, in that you can see better search results at times. I alternate. If I want to search for hard to find files, I'll conect as UP. But if I want to simply share my files, I'll turn off UP capabilities & connect as a leaf. FWIW, my upload bandwidth is a bit sad... the best I can do is ~ 50 KB/s. So I have my max simultaneous downloads set at 5.  |

| i can only give at 50 myself. but LOTR hit my question on the head I used to have a hard time 5 10 years back with the draw it took as an ultrapeer. ive been ultrapeer the past two days and havent noticed any major issues. now one other question is when i am ultra peer i deliver or hold packets for leafs i believe to some extent and some of the search get shuffled through me as an ultrapeer so could i be liable for someone else dling a illegal file through me? I'm not interested in trading actively i dl items i want to have copies of that i already purchased. I just don't want to be culpable for joe d'loader grabbing a bunch of kiddy porn while he is in my tree. Legally speaking. |

| I am not totally understanding of the way downloads work. But to my knowledge downloads go directly between the uploader and downloader, not via ultrapeers. Once someone begins a download, they become directly connected to the uploader to my knowledge. If you used LW 4 you might have been aware of the Direct Connect search option. I believe downloads work in same fashion as DC. (DC search function was restricted to 'Friends' in LW 5.) Ultrapeers help people to connect to the network. They are also the search hubs. They act as go-betweens for searches and help distribute searches. Search results I am not sure about how they work.  |
