Default bit torrent

Can anyone explain to me what a bit torrent is and what to do with it ?(politely please!). I keep seeing it but have no idea what it is.

BitTorrent is an application developped initially by Bram Cohen. It uses .torrent files to download a file from multiple sources. All the info about the BitTorrent protocol found here: http://www.bittorrent.com/FAQ.html
