These volunteers keep the board organized and moving. Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity) Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum. Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules. Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. 2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. 3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum. 4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks. 5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. 6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. 7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required. 8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning. 9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. 10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents. 11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. 12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit. 13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues. Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis. Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community. |

| Short story: I have found that Morpheus Preview Edition (the new version of Morpheus) contains spyware which launches everytime Internet Explorer is invoked. Long story: I noticed that Internet Explorer was being very slow to launch as of a few days ago. I also noticed that my computer's webserver logs contained an odd line, which seemed to coincide with my Internet Explorer launches: 05:05:40 127.0.0.1 HEAD /bpboh.dll - 404 162 150 0 HTTP/1.1 rdxrDLL;SID=b0000001;DllVers=1.0.0.0 I decided to a bit of digging. I first confirmed that this hit to my local webserver does occur each time Internet Explorer is launched. Then, I launched File Monitor (free tool from www.sysinternals.com) to see what files IE was launching at startup. Turns out it was running this bpboh.dll file: 12:07:48 AM IEXPLORE.EXE:1208 IRP_MJ_CREATE D:\WINDOWS\bpboh.dll SUCCESS Attributes: N Options: Open Interesting. So I decided to rename the file to hide it. Launching Internet Explorer again did not cause my webserver to log the "bpboh.dll" hit. Next I examined the bpboh.dll file, and found all sorts of curious references in it: one to "BuyersPort" (the 'Shop' page on the new Morpheus), a few to Barnes and Noble, Sephora, and two very curious ones: www.rdxrp.com - visiting this site takes you to Morpheus' Homepage "morph" - possible a reference to Morpheus? I then went to the Morpheus directory, and saw that the installer log left this behind RegDB Key: SOFTWARE\rdxr RegDB Val: 1.3.3.1 RegDB Name: mv RegDB Root: 2 RegDB Old: 1.3.3.1 Self-Register: D:\WINDOWS\bpboh.dll User Rights: Admin Clearly, this means that Morpheus is installing Spyware. Please announce this on your website, and also tell people that they can delete the spyware simply by deleting the bpboh.dll. It may also be a good idea to search through the registry for references to bpboh.dll and delete them; though only experienced users should do that. |

| There is an article on slashdot.org about this. Here's the link: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...99&threshold=3 Microsoft added a great feture to Internet Explorer to make it easy to install "helper" programs. Thank you Microsoft, oh joy joy joy. What this nifty little "helper" does is watch every address you go to. If you try to go to certain sites it invisibly bounces you off of a MusicCity server so that when get where you are going it lists MusicCity as the refferer. MusicCity gets paid for every person they reffer. Not only is this NOT something you want, not only does this slow browsing, not only does this make some systems unstable, not only are MusicCity's advertizing affiliates are getting screwed paying for visitors that they would have gotten anyway for free, but MusicCity is STEALING the payments that should have gone to the actual reffering page. I *was* planning to stick with MusicCity because they really seemed like the goodguys. F*CK that. I am now downloading the normal NON-MusicCity version of Gnutella. I just need to figure out which one -Alsee |

[Edit:] Oh and I forgot to mention Gnucleus doesn't have any spyware. Last edited by Smilin' Joe Fission : March 21st, 2002 at 12:43 AM. |

| I also found another file that gets downloaded. It's hidden in your windows\temporary internet files folder. Just do a find file for travelerredirect(1).xml I believe this is the file that swipes affiliate commissions and credits the music city or buyersport account! Very underhanded tactics. |

As for LimeWire, the newest versions certainly do have spyware except if you purchase LimeWire Pro. I know Ad Aware doesn't actually pick up some of the components that LimeWire uses (I use Ad Aware myself). My guess is that it's because Ad Aware doesn't bother to scan for Java applications... but that's only my guess. |

| You can stop the Spyware/SPAM today! http://opensourcep2p.sourceforge.net/ Don't donate your time, effort and computer network resources to third party commercial interests! |

| thanks for the info I sent an e-mail to Grokster and told them I had removed their software and was disgusted with all the spyware on it they replied with a very long and boring letter saying it's not spyware but "adware" what the heck is the difference? they also said that the fact the "adware" was in the program was stated in the fine print (I'm a woman- I don't read that stuff) not being very computer literate and not saving the info that "Ad-Aware" found I don't have a snappy comeback for them anyone have any ideas? thanks so much Tasha Tasha |

Spyware, on the other hand, is software that sits in the background and gathers information on you. This information is fed to either an advertiser or other 3rd party who might, in turn, sell it to other advertisers or interested 3rd parties. Quote:
