Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Arrow *** Free-Loader Prevention!!!

People who has LimeWire (limewire should not be recommended by dial-up) should have a uploading at least enough for other users to download as fast. Or else, it will probably take a lot more hours to download from LimeWire then off your browser.

What I mean is that LimeWire Free version should at least have 28.44kb upload, so many peers can download as fast, I mean, people always lower their upload ,then other peers who just downloaded won't get as fast as of your browser.
And this will seem to help the LimeWire Pro Sales, if they don't want the upload rule (somewhere 28.44kb).

I'm sorry but lowering the upload option, isn't good for faster peer sharing and people will just quit limewire for slow downloads such as something 700mb, slow, but when this option changes, people with T1 can let users download faster, (or at least people who already downloaded the file completed.

I'm sorry if this was already requestion, but adding this would be

Freeloaders aren't dial-up users. Freeloaders are people who don't share their files. People with dial-up connections have just as much right to use LW as people with faster connections.

People with a modem connection are sometimes more reliable sources than those with the faster connections.

If you don't want to download from people with a slow connection, then don't...nobody's forcing you to.

NO, i didn't men dial-up isn't for limewire, i'm just saying most my REAL point is that most people dont share, and there should be something that can speed up downloads.
I mean, if you can see my scheme above, it might help LimeWire out, but who knows? maybe people will start downloadin faster.

Your right about that...

But theres another problem with that...
If LimeWire makes, minimal 25kb upload speed.
Then people going to take the files from the shared folder and put in in another folder.

If LimeWire could make it somehow with points... Every 100kb that has been uploaded +1 point. And for every 1000kb downloading -1 point.

Right now, the upload speed is 58kb/s. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

If u see how many people downloading those dvds... and u look how many people sharing it... well... i get almust everyday 5 different people that downloading it. But there are just about +/- 5 people who shares it, sometimes 10 but thats seldom.

Default Limiting LW usage due to speed

JohnnySlater & File Supporter

I'm not quite sure if I understand what you guys are suggesting but it seems that you are both saying that LW Basic (& may be Pro too) should have a minimum upload speed usage set (at 28.44 kbs - modem speed).

Now, to you guys this might seem a brilliant idea (because you have broadband connections and live in the US where the cabling infrastucture is great) but what about people in other parts of the world that do not have great cabling infrastucture, people who do not have the latest high speed PCs or users where their ISPs have decided to introduce "bandwidth shaping".

It's obvious that you guys have not really thought through your suggestion carefully enough or have (unintentionally) taken a very parochial view.

I just compare with my own region...
I have home, just for 30 euro, u have max 70kb/s upload speed.
other packets:
20 euro, 35kb/s.
30 euro, 70kb/s.
50 euro, 140kb/s.

The people who has modem, and have a lower upload speed then 25kb/s, it will just slow down. So from 25kb/s, it will be maybe 10kb/s. And if LW works with points, it will take a little longer to get 1 point.
Im not agree with blocking everyone who hasnt 25kb/s upload speed... but in the option, the lowest what u can fill in must be 25kb/s.

This way people can download at full speed!

I dont even understand why LW put that 'changing uploadspeed'-thing in option... Everyone that downloads must also share things! Thats what i think about it

Couldn't limewire just monitor the connection speeds and set the upload rate accordingly, or ask what kind of a connection a user has and use that to create the limits.

Eg, if a user selects '56k modem' the upload speed would be lowered, but the download speed could also be capped to the limits of that kind of connection.

That would even things out for people who try to share less, as by choosing 'modem' they lower both their upload and download rates..

Edit: The current controls in the "options" menu could still be used, with 100% of download/upload bandwidth reflecting the amount of the maximum abilities of chosen connection type, and vica-versa, though upload limits obviously bottoming out at a respectable amount before they become too low dependant on the connection

meh.

I don't mean to knock your idea:

But LW does not own or control the network, you forget that it is a Gnutella network not a LW network. Therefore, LW does not have the right to monitor, control or impose any kind of conditions on the network.

I know you, and the the other guys, are worried about speed (both upload and download) but the only fair way that everybody can benefit is when telecom/ISP companies invest in better infrastructure and not impose stupid restrictions like "bandwidth shaping" on their users.

I meant for each individual application monitoring the speed of each individuals current connection speed to allow it to form settings dependant on that.

I know limewire has no control over the network.

The Gnutella Net was set up for everybody not just those with fast connection speeds. There are allot of people out there that are not as lucky as some of us and either can not afford, or have available to them the fast connection speeds.

Now a person that is on dial up lets say 56k modem can DL at around 8Kb/s and that is if they have there UL speed set to 1Kb/s and it will take them around 30 min to DL an average MP3 file. I hate to tell you this but I don't really care if they don't share at all while they are DLing as long as they share some of the time.

I usually leave LW running 24/7 UL at 45Kb/s at night and 35Kb/s during the time I am using the computer for other things. I very rarely DL anything other than when I am testing.

The reason I do this is because the Gnutella net and LimeWire was set up by unselfish people who just wanted the ability to share and transfer files with others.

Now if you want to tell me that I have to share a certain amount in order to use LimeWire I would just tell you to kiss my and quit sharing all together. That isn't what it is all about.

Anyway there are other apps out there that are set up like what you are talking about. If that is what you want then just use them.

LimeWire and the Gnutella net will survive without you. It has survived and thrived for a long time using it current format. And it keeps growing and most likely will continue to grow because it doesn't put restrictions on people. If you want something to fail just start putting restrictions and conditions on it.

I do not think you thought you suggestion through. You apparently thought about yourself and stooped there. Try thinking about the others out there that are not as lucky as you are.

If you go back to the early days of file sharing everybody had dial up. If you want to talk about sloooooow that was slow.

(It must be bed time I just spent 20 min righting an opinion in a thread that hasn't had any activity in almost 2 months)

The trouble with your idea is that you're trying to FORCE your way on others in a dictatorial way. YOU think there's no good reason for someone else to limit uploads. You need to have an open mind. You have a right to control your activities, others have rights. So you're in Europe and you're getting used to the EU dictatorship?

JhonySlater, are u crazy, the points system is from Edonkey, and if you're not popular uploading, then no-one in your all life will upload to you, specially if you're on dial-up, that's too hostile for dial-up users (i cut those chains with ADSL 200 Kb/s, even there i can't upload more than 10 Kb/s dl'ing at 15 Kb/s), that idea is totally out of this world

I voted yes to being slow at times. I have a reason for that though. I have been watching my connections to others that I download from and I have notticed there are people I am supposed to be getting files from and yet when I browse them they have nothing that I am downloading. I like to refer to these people as piggy backers. I think they attach themselves to certain file or persons files and steal bandwidth from others. That to me is something that people need to start to watch out for. I know this to be true because I will pause the download and watch my bandwidth increase to what it should be. I then resume the download and browse each person on that download and there are maybe 2 to 3 people on there that are not shareing what it is that I am after. You want better speed? get rid of these people "what I like to call piggy backers" and you will see an increase in your download speed. I do click on these individuals and block them but I dont know if that stops them from being able to still download. Hope to see something done about this.

Default set up your options properly

i had dial-up (really slow), now i have T1 connection. what i didn't like then was the selfish sharers that wouldn't give me the time to get something downloaded. all the thousands of songs i have aren't worth a pisshole in snow if i'm not on.

even tho in my searches i pick the fastest connections T3 or T1 they can still run slow(1,2,3 kbs). for my setup the normal range is around 15-25kbs DL from one host T1 or T3 connection for one song.

the reason is because they allow too many uploads at a time. even tho i can only DL 3 at a time, they are allowing too many total UL.

the people that need to be banned are the ones that WON'T set up their tools properly!

p.s. anyone who has dial-up send me a PM i'll find something you'll like, and i'll leave the light on for ya.
