I'm very sorry for my lackign answers. I work by subscribing to forums, and somehow I forgot to subscribe to this most important of our boards...

Anyway: A codec is a way to encode video files (that means, it is a way to save them so they don't take too much space. A film of one hour which isn't encoded takes about 12 Gigabytes of diskspace. The same film encoded in ogg theora takes about half a Gigabyte, but with a slightly lesser quality.)

To view a film you need the codec with which it was encoded (because that codec "knows" how the data is stored and how to turn it into moving pictures again).

The types are tehformats of the files. They are similar to codecs, but they not only encode video content but all kinds.
For video the most common formats are
.avi
.mpg
.mpeg
.ogm
.mkv

The first three can be opened by almost any program. For the last two you need special plugins for some programs.

Most codecs and formats can be used with free video programs like the videolan client and the mplayer:
- VideoLAN - Free Software and Open Source video streaming solution for every OS!
- Mplayerhq.ru

Besides: Welcome to Phex and happy sharing!

re...

well i tried it.....it works fine...but each time when i start the program it displays a note "Phex isnt able to control or moniter the content of Gneutella network"...but after that its working fine...it gives a lot of erronous reasults during search.....

the major problem i am facing is with file downloading....i mean if i start downloading....its working (either downloading / waiting / qued) ..but when i turn of my laptop and restart downloading next day...98% of the time....i dont get a link to that down load....i tried to download about 50 files only for 2 files i got the connectivity the next day!!!! It might be the problem of the link or peer not being active...and not the problem of the Software.....

this has been my observation.....by the way i am using McAfee Security Suit 2007...but its working fine with it..no conflicts or issues...

i also feel that when it is writing to HDD its slightly freezing my laptop for 1-2 sec.....i have quite a good config of 2.0 GHz duo core AMD Turon with 1GB RAM and 80 GB SATA HDD

That note is fine. Phex is not able to monitor the Gnutella network, and it will never be able to do so.

Just keep that in mind when you do seaches :)

Most people are offline after a day, or their IP changed, so your observation is correct.

It could be a motherboard issue. I experience the same when I copy huge amounts of data from one disk to another.

How often does it occur?
