Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Angry sneaky sexy download

I downloaded a program yesterday called WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL from a site numbered 65 100 210 216 (3s) I think. It downloaded slowly but compltely BUT when I went to open it I found it was not that program at all but instead a sexually oriented series of web links (international to boot) which deposited a german sex website link into my tool bar in windows. It is in my windows dial up file.
I cannot get rid of this link, I got rid of all of the other unwanted junk but I still do NOT have my desired program.
Be aware of this download site. and I hope limewire is aware of it too and can do something about it. Can anyone help me get rid of this unwanted link? How do I procede?
Thanks,
David K

Wink reply to peerless

Peerless, you are right in all of your assumptions. I am new to limewire (very new) but I learned a lesson here. I will be more sensible in the future.
But I still have this german link to sex sites on my toolbar in windows (lower right hand corner of screen) How do I lose that? No matter what I do I get some message about can't delete it because a disk may be full. Is there a work around to get rid of pesky files?
Thanks for your comments and I would appreciate any other help you can give me.

Talking 2nd reply to peerless

peerless... thanks for the advice. Not worried about wife seeing site since she rarely uses her computer let alone mine. She is a writer who prefers yellow paper and a flair. Hardly my worry. I am worried about having my computer invaded...a violation from a proprietary standpoint. How dare they!! I know this is naive but it really ****** me off.
I will use your advice to good advantage and thanks.

Default unwanted kiddy porn

I personally don't use limewire and it is permanently not allowed on my computer anymore. My young son was downloading songs and some sick @#$%& uploaded kiddy porn. I am now contacting the police about it. I don't think limewire would want to be known to have this crap distributed on their system. The names of the files where not cute, they said exactly what it was Illegal porn. If the adminstrators could do anything about finding out who sent it, I would be grateful. Whoever would take these pictures in the first place should be locked up and the key thrown away.

This is a big problem BUT this is NOT a Limewire issue, rather this occured due to unscrupulous folks using the Gnutella network... Limewire is just a program on your PC using a network shared by many different programs... the results you got were due to the acts of folks other than the Limewire developers... I have had the same effects occur to me with several other programs on the same network. Should you choose you can filter some of this stuff out by selecting Tools / Options / Filters / Keywords and checking the box marked FILTER ADULT CONTENT. Again Limewire is a tool used to share files on a network that is will continue to live without it.

Smile Things to try

Hi,

I make no gurantees but...

For the 'tool bar' item try the following:
1.On the Windows Taskbar select the 'Start' button.
2.Next Select the 'Run' option.
3.In the box enter msconfig
4.Select the 'OK' Button.
5.Click on the 'Startup' tab.
6. Here is where you are sort of of your own. You need to look for an item that looks suspicious and then un-check the box. Write down the name incase you need to re-select it later.
7. Reboot your machine and see if the icon still appears.

I am not too sure of what your other symptoms are.
If you have a Desktop Item that you cannot delete try dragging it into the trash can. Then select empty on the trash can.

You mentioned an item placed in your dial up file. If you could describe this a little better I might be able to help.

Good Luck!

Ken

Couple of points here. Noone can upload to you, you have to click on the file and download it. How old is your son? If he's too young to know what those files with the sick name's were, then he shouldn't have been unsupervised on the net. Sorry.
Also, if the songs he was downloading are copyrighted, you do know that is stealing, and also illegal.
No, I don't condone kiddie porn. I just can't handle people who don't have the common sense to use the internet wisely and try to blame software for their lack of it.

Cool The Devil Made Me Do It

Hi,

I am wearing asbestos pants so that you all may flame me.

This thread is splintered at best.

I would like to offer something for consideration that I heard a long time ago.

A great man once said, that the defination of a critic, is one who goes out into the battle field, after the war is over, and shoots the survivors.

Default ken ray!

Hi there. I'm the "unreg" that posted directly above you here. I almost apologised for helping to drag this thread off topic even further, guess I should have.
I wasn't flaming the original poster.....not at all. I remember my first virus download very well..(it was a nasty bugger and finally ended in me throwing in the towel and reformatting the entire drive). Nope, never criticise a newbie who honestly needs help and advice. Probably could've saved me alot of aggravation.
I will, however, play critic to parents who blame software for their children downloading porn. (especially when the kid is more than likely doing something illegal to begin with)
OK, I feel a little better now. and since I can't help the original problem here - I'll just take a hike.

Sorry 'bout that.

Default sneaky sexy download

I got the same problem after downloading a file on BearShare.
The file was a one of The Goon Show files, and I should have been wary of it as it was a zip file not an mp3 or wav.

It put a pacman like icon on my desktop and in my systray. on clicking it brought up a link to a German porn site. It was called x-finder i think. I put out a search and deleted all references to it but there is still a reference left

A folder called Favourites had been placed in one of my Widows Folders There is already one in there (with the two stars on)
most of the connected links were in there.

There is another folder which had a reference along with a strange file "ado" or something similar, the first file i deleted but when deleting the second two other files appeared. deleting these was ok but again, when deleting the ado three others appeared and they just went on multipling every time I deleted them so in the end I had to leave the ado file in.

I would sugest that if you ran a serch for x- it would brind up x-finder as I am not too sure about the finder.

You could also search for porn, erotic, Download***** and sex as I have also found links to porn sites since this came up.

I will try to find that folder with the multipling files in and post what I find.

you know this really causes me significant angst - I've always found the emotional attachment mac users have to their fringe hardware/software irritating - all a bit too much like religous zealotry for my taste - but - I sure would enjoy being insulated from from all the crap us windows users have to deal with
