Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning.

10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit.

13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

If you're not supposed to share more than 700 files or whatever...

What's with the green box at the bottom of LimeWire with a large number (at the moment, 11,261), which states when I put the mouse icon over it "You are sharing 11,261 files"? I'm uploading no files and downloading two- what exactly does it mean?

Hi...I have a question. If I wanted to stop sharing my files, how would I do that and not have them all disappear? I clicked on "stop sharing" on my shared folder and it just disappeared. I added it again, but now everything is still being shared. Does anyone know how to stop sharing but still keep all my files in my library? Thanks!

I'm sorry that you feel the need to be bitter and nasty to a total stranger, and I am sorry that you look for the worst in people. I have been sharing my files for over two years and will continue to do so, as the network will only work if people share files. I am happy to do so, and will continue to. My concern is not for any agency who is coming to arrest me for shared files. However, I have had recent severe problems with spyware and viruses, and I am getting a tech to come clean my computer this week. In the meantime, I am trying to close all open connections so that I don't share these problems. Once my computer is clean, I will put my files back online. It was a temporary removal from the network, but I still wanted to be able to use my files in the interim.
I am sorry for you that you are so angry and bitter and want to take that out on someone else and jump to the worst possible conclusion. I admit that I am not good with computers, hence I asked a simple question in the hopes that someone who was more knowledgable could help me, which I thought was the point of these forums. I did not expect a response to be antagonistic, confrontational and contain swearing. (I also have no idea what "rtfm" means, so that wasn't helpful, but given your post I'm sure it was something nasty and mean.) You clearly know a lot about Limewire and since I don't, I thought that someone like you could help me. Apparently not. I don't understand your need to post a reply if the point was just to be a jerk - why bother?

Exactly, I couldn't agree more. No sharing means no network. Every single one of my files is open for sharing, as they have been since the second I signed on to Limewire. My original question was just to figure out how to temporarily not share and still view files, and put everything back to shared once my computer is ready. I don't know how to do that.
However, Sphinx, given your advice I think I need to cut down on the number of files shared as I have over 1000 - is that a true concern or can I just continue to leave the whole folder open and shared? Should I put a couple hundred in a non-shared folder to get my shared number under 700? Do a couple hundred files really make a difference? And if that's true, again, how can I make my non-shared folder available for use?
Sorry for all the questions, I am not very technological and could use all the help I can get. But obviously I want to keep sharing my files as much as possible.
Thanks!

Question How Do I ? Strange inquiry

I have tried to upload my own personal demo's (wmv) format, anyway, I have never had much luck with it being grabed , why ?

Should I convert it to mpeg to make it more attractive ?

Or do I need to use more exciting key worded names?

Or does it just take time before files get uploaded to enough users ?

I have seen other people's personal home made files and wondered hmmm, where am I going wrong ?

popular stuff I can upload, so I don't think its a technical issue.

And my second inquiry, why is it that ,I can't find those older music videos from the 90's you know?

Is it because in my 30's im just an old man and most users are teenagers or what?

thanxs - to anyone that posts.

converting to mpeg or avi would be a good idea. wmv files are not the most trusted format. There is a sticky somewhere at the top of one of the forums about wmv files.

naming the files is something you neeed to work out yourself. You could always offer the same file under different titles and see which one attracts more attention.

As soon as your Limewire is loaded and all the files are hashed, others can see your files. How long they will take to appear in peoples searches depends mostly on luck and your choice of titles. but for best results you must be sharing for several hours ... just putting a share up for an hour is no use atall

Posting a new thread would have been a good idea btw... not adding onto an old one that is totally unrelated

Older music videos ... really I dunno.

I hope this helps a bit

Default Err

So, you can have shared files on your computer, but just not be sharing alot? So you could like highlight all your files > right click > hit stop sharing, and then you'd be pretty safe?

Default There is a middle ground here

You guys have a habit of making everything black or white

If you have more files shared than you feel safe sharing

Try searching for them on the network. If there are many people sharing it, then there is no need for you to share it as well.

I know it takes a while to do, but it's the best way to cutting down on your shared files, because you will not be removing files from the network

Limewire 4.12.3 / Newest Phex / Newest Azureus

I recommend using either an old Limewire version without BitTorrent support or Phex for Gnutella, Azureus is BitTorrent. None of this Limewire Gnutellatorrent hybrid crap.

Hi folks, a simple legal heads up for the newbies...

The keyword is "Copywrite"

Now I cannot speak for the US, but here in the UK it is illegal to dowbload anything that is copywrite that you have not been given permission and/or purchased.

Defined as simply as possible, you are NOT shareing, you are copying, the original still exists, its not like borrowing a CD from your mate and returning it, it IS like borrowing it and copying it, this is illegal.

In the UK you are permitted to make one copy of your own DVD/CD original as a backup, and you must be able to produce the original if asked by law.
