Developers please note:limewire issues
 

I have a few issues with limewire that i would like the program developers(or whatever) to adress, or, at least give me information on how to rectify these issues.
NOTE:I am ready to stand corrected if any of my information is false.

1-Limewire popping up without permission.
It has come to my attention that many Limewire users are experiencing the program opening up without them knowing. This issue has happened to myself and my friends. In another post, it is said that Limewire popping up unnessesarily is due to a virus putting a shortcut in the startup menu. This is NOT true. Using the latest editions of Norton Security, Panda, and AD-Aware, i have found no trace of virus placing a shortcut in the start menu. Instead of Moderators having to advise people unnessesarily to scan for viruses, i think the limewire developers should rectify this problem themselves, instead of falsely blaming viruses.

2-Limewire still operates when "apparently" disconnected.
This problem may or may not be related to the issue above. It seems that limewire still operates when the dialog in the extreme bottom left of the window says "disconnected". Other users still download files from me when i hope to be disconnected. And, as limewire keeps popping up every time i close it(issue one) i cannot stop people sucking up my bandwith. On a 56k modem, i cant afford it.

3-Limewire.com banner:"no spyware, no adware" lies.
Limewire has been classified as BOTH spyware and adware, and also "nagware"

Finally, i am not trying to bring the gnutella system down. I use Limewire everyday as a file transfer program between my friends, and I, like many others, would breathe a sigh of releif to see at least one of these issues rectified.

Since so many LW users acquire the program through scam sites, and given that these scam versions may well be infected by various sorts of malware...it's just good old common sense to suggest that users scan for problems. You also have to remember that certain users will download anything without care and so, may have unknowingly allowed a virus into their system. In my opinion, advising someone to scan for a virus is just being careful.

2. I have absolutely no clue about this one so, sorry, can't answer it. Though, I'm sure some of the more senior people here can help you out.

3. I've been running LW for 18 months and have never found it to contain either spyware or adware. I scan for both on a daily basis. The link you gave took me to a site which was selling a particular antispyware program. Of course they want you to think LW has spyware...they want you to buy their program. If you download LW from the official site, it will be clean. Certain antispyware programs will tell you there's a problem, when there's not. It's called a false positive. It's a marketing tool;)

Okay, in reply to your response on (3), i must advise you that even though Limewire may SEEM not to be spyware, it actually is. What else would let other users take files from your computer? This is just like the whole Rootkit problem with Sony. It might not be malicious in the beginning, but users could change it. Limewire IS open source, am i right?

For a non-biased opinion on this, check out http:\\www.computing.net and post a topic on the forum regarding whether limewire is spyware. I am confident that the users WILL tell you whether limewire is spyware or not.

Also, a VERY IMPORTANT issue that i forgot to question.

It has come to my attention that limewire is being used to transfer "fake" files, which may seem like a useful file, but is actually just junk. A folder called "complete" has shown up in my limewire library (although i cant find the physical folder on the hard disk). In this folder is a list of hundreds of files, which are all .ZIP files, such as windows service pack 2, music albums, nero, and various other programs. Curiously, all of the folders were EXACTLY the same size, 851.7KB.
Upon opening the zip files, they contained only one file, setup.exe, which, upon opening, seemed to be a spyware removal tool. I URGE users not to open these files, as they are only spreading them across the network, and the "anti-spyware" tool contained in the zip file may actually be a virus of sorts.

I will update as nessecary, replies to the topic would be interesting.

As for your 851.7 KB files, if you'd bothered to read the forum or use the search function, you'd know that files of this size are well known for being fakes. LimeWire cannot control what people share, it's up to the user to check out what they download. Would you buy a car just because it looked good from a distance??? If you want to download .zip and .exe files then you take your chances. Don't blame LW for crap that people put up to share. Ever heard of Overpeer??

PestPatrol has not worked properly in almost 2 years. One of the LW programmers commented about this more than once. Here's some examples:

There's a spyware forum which discusses the plusses & minuses of each anti-spyware program. PestPatrol has been reported as being "faulty" by these specialists. Specialists who are themselves spyware programmers. You should also be aware that some anti-spyware programs have spyware/adware themselves as reported by that forum. There's also scam versions. So be wise to choose your spyware program carefully! ;)

i have found, if i want to shutdown L W for the night just set upload slots to 0 per & 0 total (apply). when all are done uploading no one else can get in. rather than some who shut down while i'm sitting at 98 percent!!!!
like ..hobo says you could wait days till no-one is uploading. :)
