What does mp4 mean?

Usually when I am downloading movies I choose .avi files because I seem to have the least problems with my limited knowledge of all the different 'formats' and what is required to run them.
I am trying to download a movie and can only get an excellent quality version in mp4 so I would like to know what that means and also what software is required to run it, please?

Usually it would be x264 format video and either ac3 or aac format audio. VLC should play it or pretty much any codec pack installed will allow you to play it with e.g. WMP. Personally I prefer the Combined Community Codec Pack and MPC (included in the pack), but remember only 1 codec pack should be installed on a system at any given time.

Thanks for your help

Hi Sleepless,
Well, that just goes to show how little I know. None of that meant anything to me. I just don't know what any of those terms mean but anyway, it turned out that the file was corrupt and my computer archived it. So frustrating because I am longing to have that kid's movie and there is not a single .avi copy which is not corrupt. Why do people do it? It is so nasty and childish and I wish there were a way Limewire would take responsibility for checking everything on their site. There must be a way that everything can be run through a scan similar to a backup.
Thanks again. It looks as though I will just have to stay with .avi and if I can't find the movie in that format, go without.
Regards... :giggle:

No one runs the Gnutella network. The network is people like you and the ones you download from or upload to. All Limewire does is provide a client for connecting you. And I seriously doubt that Limewire LLC will start checking all the files to see which ones really are your movie, especially considering the legal repercussions such a move could start.

If you google any of the terms, they will be the top result. I am not going to write +5,000 words explaining things, which have just on this forum been explained many many times before and several thousand times elsewhere on the Internet. WMP is Windows Media Player, MPC is Media Player Classic, VLC is a video player etc. etc.

Apart from that I gather when you said archived, you meant quarantined as in your antivirus caught it. This is very unlikely if this was a +700MB file which almost all movies are.. unless they are for ipod or the likes (really small screen)

Thanks again for your help

Hi Sleepless,
Yes, my antiviral program caught the program but, one thing I have noticed since installing the new version is that people are not putting the correct information. For instance, the will put 5.78MB instead of 578 MB. They don't fill out the view information correctly like putting in the length of the movie so you just don't know what you are getting. I rely on Bitzi and if I can't find it on Bitzi I just don't bother. Some people are really upset and put comments saying just how they feel, like "you drongo, a movie is longer than three minutes". I don't understand why everyone doesn't help each other, as you do, rather than misnaming movies or setting someone up for a Trojan. I guess I wish the world were an ideal place but it seems silly to waste time causing others distress.
Again, thank you for your help. I pick up a little here and there but I don't understand the jargon because people do tend to use acronyms which are rather unhelpful.
Cheers...:aweof:

You would be learning everything much quicker if you relied on Google as well. Like the odds of getting a proper rip at only 578MB size is slim to none. I would go as far as say anything below 686MB i.e 700 muinus 2% will be a waste of time 99.9% of the time.

I would recommend you read through this also http://www.gnutellaforums.com/limewi...ind-music.html While it says music, it's just as much a guide on how to use Limewire. Also for movies, check out the link at the very end of first post. Limewire isn't all that great for movies.

Also here is a lot more about formats, codec, players etc. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/tips-t...p3-fixers.html

Hi Sleepless,
Thanks again for your help and time. That is really helpful and I have been following your advice. You are certainly right where it comes to Limewire not being that good for movies. My Canadian friend has just spent three months out here and, having an IT son, has been able to help me a lot with the problems I was experiencing. I think he and his computer are joined at the hip as he works on opening a world wide photo library via the 'net. Between you I am feeling more confident on how to get around and find what I want. Thank you again so very much. Regards... Perre
