Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default Problems with 2.3.0

Hello

I cannot believe that in certain threads 2.3.0 was hailed as a fix-all solution for all UI problems. Here is what's new (in terms of UI bugs and questionable features)

Help From Setup dialogs

Pressing the HELP button on setup dialogs seems to have no effect, however several minutes later, without any further request for activation of the help pages, the help index pops up.

Tooltips:

Tooltips do not adhere to standard Windows UI guidelines. It would appear that the text foreground color is hard-coded black but the background color is taken from the appearance settings, hence, if you have a setting of say, Yellow on Black to make tooltips stand out, all you get is a solid black line where the tooltip should be (black fore on black back).

File Monitor:

The file monitor still only adds a tiny fraction of new file entries to the "Shared" list, however, even if you cannot see a new file in the list, it is shared. You can only tell when people start downloading them though.

Removal of right-click menu options:

The "Clear" function has been removed from the right-click options of the "Uploads" section, also there no longer is a "Clear Failed" option at the bottom of the screen. If you want to keep your uploads list uncluttered and view only successful transfers, then it's tough cheese, it would seem, however so far no uploads have taken place so I do not know how BS2.3.0 manages the upload section.

UI Inconsistencies.

The right click options "Clear" and "Clear All" are present for the download section, but not for the upload section. The "Clear Failed" and "Clear Completed" options are present on the download section but not in the upload section.

Useless:

The setup menu has one entry for each of the tabbed section in the setup dialog, you gain nothing over the previous version (Setup button then choose section) but it gives inexperienced users the impression that certain settings can only be accessed via the appropriate entry in the setup menu, so if you have settings to change in several sections, a lot of people will now close the setup menu every time they have finished with one section and call up the setup menu again simply to change sections. OK there's plenty of.... silly people, that's why firms carry out detailed usability studies.

Additional.

The tiny little "Expert controls" and their tiny little section of the window is just play ugly. It would have looked A LOT BETTER had they been moved AT THE TOP, but since you have the tabs there and the controls are section-specific, you would have to redraw the entire window. I am not sure how that would look, but I doubt it could be worse than it is now.

OLD UI BUGS:

Still there, regardless of some threads that specifically stated that these would be cleared up.

The most annoying: Some windows (Web page, Initial web page) are not presented on screen. Only their title-bar button is present, clearly activated but with no window in sight. All you can do with these windows is to close them by right-clicking on their task bar button.

Bearshare reduced to the pilot lights:
Has always been this way, and it's still there even though the pilot lights themselves are now in the opposite screen corner.

Try this:

1) Double-click on the pilot lights to reduce Bearshare to the pilot lights strip.

2) VERSIONS UP TO 2.2.7: Move the pilot lights strip to the top-right hand corner of the screen.
VERSION 2.3.0: Move the pilot lights strip to the bottom left of the screen.

3) Double-click the pilot lights strip to restore Bearshare's window.

OOPS What is that ? the window is now 96% off screen, and what's more, if the window was maximized before you reduced it to the pilot strip, now you will find that you CANNOT MOVE IT. To fix it, right-click the task bar button and select "Restore".

When the user double-clicks the pilot lights strip, the window size and origin (coordinates) should be stored so that it can be restored to the same size and postion upon further request.

Weird selection shapes / Redraw Issues.

Have you ever tried selecting multiple items by drawing a box in the upload or download sections ? Like you do in Explorer ? It does not work but try this: hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse across the upload or download section, at first you will see the normal selection area box, but then as you keep moving the mouse around the screen (with button depressed, of course) all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes will appear.

Ever searched for a file whose name is considerably longer than the file name column width ? I cannot determine at what lenght this starts, but when the file name(s) you obtain from the search passes a certain length, the entire section flashes once per second or so as the section is made to redraw. This stops if you widen the file name column so that the whole file name becomes visible, and starts again if a longer named file arrives. It happens ONLY for the portion of the search results you have on screen at the time, so you might need to scroll up/down to see this.

So, the UI probelms are still there, compounded by new ones and some questionable interface designs.

Guys. Bearshare is a good application, it takes very little to sort out these problems but you have allowed some of them to exist ever since the beginning, you should also consider releasing test versions and requesting user input when you change the UI.

Default More problems

Hello Again

Almost forgot.

When you view your web page, WMA files (Windows Media Audio native format) are still not recognised as music files (anybody knows about OGG and other popular music types?). Now that there is a search for file types, will WMA files even be considered ? I have not tried it out yet, but people viewing the standard web page will only see a tiny portion of the files you are actually sharing.

(No ZIP files, executables or much else goes into the web page, since this is not representative of the files you are in fact sharing, I wonder why this function is there at all)

I have to agree, some thing you are right about, some not.

Help From Setup dialogs

Right on this one. Tested it my self.

I don't know how important this is

File Monitor:

The file monitor still only adds a tiny fraction of new file entries to the "Shared" list, however, even if you cannot see a new file in the list, it is shared. You can only tell when people start downloading them though.

Don't know what you mean. All files I share, (that are in my shared directories, and are of a file type I share) show up in the files page.

If y mean the query monitor, it's by default turned of, because of the familly Filter, and it only shows thing when you are on the page.

This was intended. Their was a stbility issue with some users not clearing the uploads page. The uploads page is now automaticly cleared. Now need for manual clearing.

The reason these options are present in the download page, is that a user generally want to see the staus of their downloads(more than uploads). Also a person on a T1 will probably upload a lot more than donwload, if the person leaves it on 24/7

UI Inconsistencies.

The right click options "Clear" and "Clear All" are present for the download section, but not for the upload section. The "Clear Failed" and "Clear Completed" options are present on the download section but not in the upload section.

Same as above.

I don;t think some people are so stupid. Even napster has a simelar system

Additional.

The tiny little "Expert controls" and their tiny little section of the window is just play ugly. Not sure what you mean. The menu item???? It's not ugly

OLD UI BUGS:

What? I've never seen anything but the Bearshare icon in the task bar, when it is minimized

Bearshare reduced to the pilot lights:
Has always been this way, and it's still there even though the pilot lights themselves are now in the opposite screen corner.

Try this:

1) Double-click on the pilot lights to reduce Bearshare to the pilot lights strip.

When the user double-clicks the pilot lights strip, the window size and origin (coordinates) should be stored so that it can be restored to the same size and postion upon further request.

This is because it simply keeps the position. If you move the pilot lights, you move the hidden bearshare window. And it is automaticly de-maximized when moved. This is the correct way.

Weird selection shapes / Redraw Issues.

Have you ever tried selecting multiple items by drawing a box in the upload or download sections ? Like you do in Explorer ? What? I have win98 and when I do this the only thing that happens is that is selects the item, same as explorer.

I think you are comparing the list view of bearshare to the default icon type in explorer, try selecting "details" in explorer it works the same.

You can select multible items in the dl page by using shift and left click

Ever searched for a file whose name is considerably longer than the file name column width ? I cannot determine at what lenght this starts, but when the file name(s) you obtain from the search passes a certain length, the entire section flashes once per second or so as the section is made to redraw. Actually there was a Bearshare 2.3.0 Public Beta for about 3 weeks. You could have gotten it from the Bearshare Labs forum on bearshare.net.

And you forgot some real problems:

-You keep trying to connect for 3 hours and only can get a few reliable hosts...
-You do a search for something like "B**tles" and end up with 23 files...-You start considering doing a PhD in nuclear physics just to click the search button, after all the stupid posts telling you "you are not doing it right", even having used computer for 20 years...
-You quit and swear you are never going to use this terrible 2.3.0 ver again...
-You discover yourself using Morpheus, WinMX and Audiogalaxy all the time...
-You quit using it definitely, uninstall it and think "Bearshare sucks"...
-You see Vinnie acting like a moron all the time, swearing and blaming everybody for not telling he is perfect and everything he does is right...

So you suppose I am a lamer:
I use computer at work and at home...
I am a programmer...
I install and configure RedHat Linux, Mandrake, Slackware...
I have used every version of Dos and Windows available for some good years...
I have used every other P2P software available, including Morpheus/Kazaa, Limewire, Napster, WinMX, AudioGalaxy (just an example)...
I use the Internet everyday for more than 5 years...
I do tech support for lots of people and companies...
I have used the plain old Gnutella 0.56 and every Linux version of the Gnutella protocol since its beginning...
I connect to ftps thru command like in Dos and Linux...

And still.... like I said - people tell you "you don't know how to do it..." What? I really need a PhD in nuclear physics? I tried every conceivable configuration, every host available in gnufrog, zeropaid, read every help.
The problems are still there - few servers, few results.

Nobody is going to admit this is a piece of ****? You all suppose you are right and everybody is wrong? Please, be humble, especially when you don't know what and to whom you are talking... Or else, if you don't have a good solution, just shut up.

Red face

Ok. Give me your solution.

I have re-installed ver 2.2.7. Results went from 23/30 to 200/250. Not bad, eh?
Still far, very far from what I used to have only two months ago.

What happened? Network problems? Buggy/bad software (as I suppose it is)?
Excess of pride? Or maybe everybody is using other types of software, like I am doing right now?
Bearshare started as a promising alternative to Napster, but I keep seeing it getting worse everyday. It is really sad. All the time people say: "you don't know". Everybody I talk to is complaining about it, and I really mean everybody. Friends stopped using it. Forums are flooded with questions and problems.

I really want to know what is your solution... I am curious, indeed I am.

Hi!

Network problems?

Sure and 2.2.7 is running...

Add some hostcachers under setup/service:

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...&threadid=3970

In the most cases the problems are gone then...

P.S.:

Set the min/max values of the hosts to

modem 1 - 2
isdn 2 - 3
cable/dsl 3 - 6
higher 4 - 10

Hey and wait before you search until the message "enter..." will be displayed... you have to wait 2 or 3 minutes...
