Note: if you have a router you should update to LW 4.4 and up. With UPnP (universal plug and play), LW now does the port forwarding automatically for you when your router supports UPnP. --look into your manual or search google to see if your router is UPnP compliant--.

You have a router that doesn't support UPnP or you want to do port forwarding manually? This site has all of them and explains how to forward a port (In case of gnutella, it is 6346)

To get a static address (for stable port forwarding that you won't have to change in your config once in a while):

If your port 6346 is blocked, or you want variety, nothing stops you from using another port: once unfirewalled you will still get the same results as if you forced the port 6346.

If you are using LW, go to options > advanced > firewall (set to port 6346 if not already) and check the option to manually configure the port below the same preference window --select the same port as above, default is 6346--).

If you want to see if you are still firewalled in LW, then go to options > error reports > click on 'see an example':
If the following line says, "Received incoming this session: true", congrats!
You are now fully open to gnutella...
If it says no, something went wrong... Check again all the steps to get unfirewalled to the port 6346.

For those of you who are forwarding a port, you will also need to forward a port within LW. You will need to use the same port no. in both the router device, any Firewall you use, LW's port setting & LW's Firewall setting. For Windows: Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall
OSX: LW's Prefs>Advanced>Firewall
OS9: Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall

But don't forget the setting in LW>... >Advanced>Port must also be the same port no. as the LW firewall setting. I have provided this sample image to make it easier for people to know what to do within LW. (sample below is for the "old" version of LW, for the version used "now" see sample 2 posts below this one!)

When port forwarding it's important to know hubs don't change anything. Sometimes hubs are no more than splced wires (crappy hubs). But port forwarding is not nessisary behind just a hub. So with your prob of switch > hub > comp think of it as switch > comp.

Here's the new settings for Port Forwarding. If your router does not support Universal Plug 'n Play (UPnP), then you can manually port forward. You'll also need to forward a port on your modem/router. Find your model on this list PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall (NOTE!: This is now refered to as Manual Port Forward & NOT Force IP. A more appropriate name for the function!) Listening Port & Manual Port Forward numbers should be the same!!! See image below. (Windows equivalent image click here)
For Windows: Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall
___ Mac OSX: (⌘ + ,) LW's Prefs>Advanced>Firewall ___ (Mac OS 9 = windows location)

I use DWL-520 D-Link. Now in that website for D-Link, I just need to add 6346 for both start port and end port? What about IP? This is what it look like when entering Port Forward.

Don't confuse the two ip's. For port forwarding the ip should be the private ip of your computer. The ports to & from would be both 6346. For Force ip above it would also be port 6346.

Go into the command prompt (windoze) and type "ipconfig" without the quotes of course. That's your private ip.

So in the D-Link website, I just add my priviate IP and add 6346 for both Start Port and End Port? Then click Force IP and add 6346 in Limewire? That's all I have to do?

That web page is how you can control your D-Link device. So yes I think you've got it now. Good luck! You did set up a static ip first didn't you as described at http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm You must have a static ip for this to work otherwise it won't work permanently b/c next time you log on you'd have a different ip (dynamic ip.) I use DWL-520 and this device is not shown in that link you gave to me. So how do I know if I have already set up static ip?

The instructions for setting up a static ip are basically the same for all models. There's a link to how to do it.

Also it should explain in your manual how to do it. I also have a D-Link & my manual does give some explanations. Yours I suspect is this one: http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx/...Jk6j8rFivsyg== else type in your model.

Port Forward.com does not list all models. So if your model is not there it's difficult to know whether port forwarding is possible or not with it. But download the manual & have a look. Then you'll find out whether it's possible or not.

Normally the steps are:
1. Set up a Static IP
2. Forward a Port
3. Force IP using 6346 within LW.

Okay I checked. I had already set up the static IP. So now when I set up the port in D-Link website, which protocol should I enabled, TCP or UDP or both?

Okay so this is what I do

1. Go to command prompt and type in ipconfig - Private IP
2. Go to D-Link website where I set up the forwarding
3. Add Private IP in Local IP
4. In both Start Port and End Port, it will be 6346
5. Protocol will be both
6.CLick enabled and apply
7. Go to Limewire and then Firewall
8. Click on Force IP and Port will be 6346 and apply it

Is that all I have to do? Now I should see huge increase in downloading speed right? Remember I have ultra fast connection, 5 Mbps= 500 KB per sec and more than 300 upload. When I download from any sever except for peer to peer network, I could download at full speed. But before this I could only download less than 20 KB per sec most of the time IN Limwire. So if I am downloading from cable user and it is good connection, I should go over 100 KB downloading speed most of the time right?

That all sounds right yes. But check your D-Link manual. With my D-Link 504G I had to reboot the modem after completing the port forwarding.

These are instructions for the D-Link 504G on a Mac. But this is a different model!!!
