bearshare has stopping working

I am using vista 64 bits for a time .. i was using bearshare for weeks and everything was ok until today when I opened bearshare . it says that bearshare has stopped working -->check online solutions or--> close the program .. I really like this program and I want it back . is vista a problem or what?

AaronWalkhouse September 6th, 2007 02:04 PM

Sometimes it is. Make sure you have set BearShare to XP compatibility mode and running as an
administrator account. Try deleting the library files in BearShare's /db/ subfolder too.

freshy September 6th, 2007 03:22 PM

well .. I have tried but it's not working .. the same error appears when I open it but I didn't find that folder to delete the library

the files are in Program Files\BearShare\db\

delete ALL files with the word library in them....I've seen various error report situations where removal of these files solved the problem...its certainly not a cure all by any means, but for some reason BearShare seems to have problems every now and again with these files....

AaronWalkhouse September 6th, 2007 10:39 PM

Hit the brakes! You definitely have the wrong version of BearShare! Version 6 is nothing more
than a re-skinned iMesh clone which is locked into a proprietary MAFIAA-approved network in
which you can only rent music for monthly fees. Dump that sucker completely and try the one
featured in this thread: BearShare has been sabotaged.

ohh I need some help for running that old bearshare version .. it says that is expired and the run program tells me to open bearshare, pause for 10 seconds and change the old date to a new one .. but how can I do that if it doesen't let me to run it:mad2:

AaronWalkhouse September 7th, 2007 03:06 AM

The start program does it for you. :p

Since you're stuck with Vista be sure to right-click on both programs and configure them to
run in XP mode and as an Admin user.

You may also have to right-click on the "C:\My Downloads" and "C:\Program Files\BearShare\Temp"
folders and set the security to allow "Everyone" full access.

thank's alot for helping me bt this older version doesen't have the same features with bearshare 6.1 .. for example i can't chat while downloading and accesing my profile page

AaronWalkhouse September 7th, 2007 03:39 AM

True, you are no longer in the RIAA-controlled zone. You are off their RADAR once again.
They can't dictate what you download or listen to anymore either. For example, search for
videos that mention "depleted uranium" for a few days and watch what happens.

You're free again! ;]

AaronWalkhouse September 7th, 2007 03:45 AM

By the way, the original BearShare has more features than that iMesh clone but you may have to
turn them on yourself because most are off by default. Have fun exploring and check my sticky
posts in the Searching and Open Discussion subforums for tips on how to block the nasties and
spot the fakes.

yes but I am curious : if i will reinstall vista should bershare 6 will work again or is a problem that can't be fixed by me? i'm just used with it :D

AaronWalkhouse September 7th, 2007 08:18 AM

Reinstalling Vista definitely sounds like overkill and unnecessary, since it is still working.

You could try scrubbing out all traces of BearMesh 6 and reinstalling it, though I would advise
against letting that RIAA-friendly company spy on your downloading habits anymore. You can
certainly get more mileage out of Myspace and IRC than the profile and chat in that software. :p

Either option will probably render most of the DRMed music you downloaded with BearMesh unplayable.

SmallTimePerson September 13th, 2007 04:48 PM

Aaron I could be wrong, but doesn't the old versions have a chat component somewhere....

Peerless September 13th, 2007 05:35 PM

it does, but its not active as the host of the chat is no longer valid

AaronWalkhouse September 13th, 2007 09:13 PM

There's a point-to-point chat too (which is still working) but the odds of catching somebody at
their keyboard is pretty small.

ursula September 14th, 2007 09:57 AM

If one compares the enormous benefits of using the 5.x.x series of BearShare :aweof: to the 'loss' of chat, I think that the chat 'chit' is a REALLY small loss !!!!!!!

Use something else for chat.

Which version of BearShare?
Which operating system are you using, Vista?
Right-click the program & choose Run as Administrator. In Properties depending on which OS you are using.

An alternative is to uninstall it, then reinstall. Right-click installer & choose Run as Administrator and set compatibility mode of all the programs to Windows XP, SP2.

BearShare on my Windows 7 opens fine. File_Girl did create a separate 5.1 beta installer for Windows 7, but I am not sure if that is the one I have.
