bearshare lite and bearshare

what is the difference between the two?

Grandpa May 28th, 2006 03:57 PM

This question is better answered by Aaron but to my knowledge the only difference is BearShare containers spyware and BearShare Lite doesn't. When running them they both pretty much preform the same.

garbagefan2 May 28th, 2006 04:00 PM

i mean the older version arron said to dl and the difference between bs lite. can i see screenshots or something. thanks

Grandpa May 28th, 2006 04:08 PM

Unfortunately I am on the road and I don't have them on my laptop. The older version that Aaron is talking about allows more connections and is almost as good as LimeWire for me in the speed department and I am starting to think it might be better in the search department. But I am not done testing yet. So far about 5% of the time it will come up with more search results. It does contain spyware though but you can remove it and BearShare will still run. Aaron can explain it better than I can though.

garbagefan2 May 28th, 2006 04:16 PM

the old one has spyware? does any of them have no spyware?

Grandpa May 28th, 2006 04:35 PM

BearShare Lite does not and the Pro version of BearShare didn't but I do not think it is available anymore. At least not any versions of it that you can be sure they are clean.

garbagefan2 May 28th, 2006 04:46 PM

the old version that Aaron said has spyware? what about older ones besides the one Aaron?

Grandpa May 28th, 2006 04:51 PM

I don't know but I see you and Aaron are both using PM so I am assuming he is answering that question.:D

The ad-supported versions of 5.1.0 and earlier had the harmless and easily
removable WhenU Save! adware.

Apparently the iMesh company bought the BearShare franchise at about the
same time as the staged $30 million one-day "lawsuit" and paid the "settlement",
then promptly installed the Zango spyware in all versions, including "Lite". This
new version of BearShare starts hooking up to multiple spy sites in Florida and
Israel even as you start to install it and refuses to continue if you do not
permit the spying to continue.

garbagefan2 May 28th, 2006 05:35 PM

what does when u save do? i hate ad ware it is so annoying. then eventually adware turns into spyware

AaronWalkhouse May 28th, 2006 06:54 PM

This one didn't, and it had been left removable from BearShare from day one so
the few who didn't want it could uninstall it without losing BearShare. All
WhenU did was display ads, which is why it is generally considered the only
relatively benign adware in existence.

The old versions of Pro, Lite and betas were free of adware. As far as I know,
the new owners are completely the opposite and intend to force Zango on
everyone quickly to make a quick buck before it drives masses of people away.

I suppose they hope to have a replacement with music sales built in and the
spyware will help repel people from BearShare to the new product.

It's a risky gamble if they can't get a catalog up right away.

Personally, I would have taken the opposite tack, gotten back in contact
with the public by reopening the forums and chat, and then moved with the
customers
into the new model instead of moving against the customers by
raiding them with the worst spyware and hiding in the new fortress they made.

If they want to stand half a chance they will have to restart wide open public
beta testing, not so much to find and avoid bugs but to fit the software to
the users as it grows and changes. That's why BearShare became so powerful
and popular and also largely why iMesh withered and died. It was our advice
which led to the long and profitable relationship with WhenU and Fastclick. ;)

garbagefan2 May 29th, 2006 07:54 AM

so when u and fastclick doesnt bring up popups and you can just get rid of when u. will when u and fastclick have remains of itself on my computer?

AaronWalkhouse May 29th, 2006 08:18 AM

WhenU and Fastclick both bring popup ads but both are easily defeated and
leave nothing behind when you remove them.

To remove the WhenU adware use the uninstaller in the C:\Program Files\Save
or C:\Program Files\VVSN folders. To disable the Fastclick popup go to the
Security tab of the Internet Options control panel and add www.bearshare.com
and home.bearshare.com to the Restricted Sites Zone.

garbagefan2 May 29th, 2006 03:44 PM

do popups keep coming up before u uninstall whenu and fastclick

garbagefan2 May 29th, 2006 04:01 PM

i dont have when u save on my computer. i dont have the save or vvsn folders. its not there do i still have it

AaronWalkhouse May 29th, 2006 06:56 PM

No. They always use those folders, and you never got them in the first place
because you are using an old beta.
