new bearshare lite

what can you do with bearshare lite that you couldnt do with bearshare? and the new version of bearshare lite is there spyware bundled with it?

AaronWalkhouse June 6th, 2006 08:57 PM

BearShare Lite is limited in power compared to the other versions.

garbagefan2 June 8th, 2006 02:33 PM

is the new version of bearshare lite safe?

AaronWalkhouse June 8th, 2006 03:50 PM

I doubt it. See if it tries to force Zango on you.

garbagefan2 June 9th, 2006 02:41 PM

heres what it says on www.bearshare.com/lite/

Quote:

Download BearShare Lite -
We’ve removed the bundled software
Get Games, Music and Software quickly
with fast Magnet links
Clean, simple user experience
its probably not true but what do you think?

AaronWalkhouse June 9th, 2006 08:28 PM

That used to be true but the iMesh guys are in control of it now, and nobody trusts that bunch. ;]

garbagefan2 June 9th, 2006 09:10 PM

those damn assholes that work for imesh

garbagefan2 June 9th, 2006 09:12 PM

im too afraid to download it to see if they force zango and what do you mean by force zango?

AaronWalkhouse June 9th, 2006 10:12 PM

In the regular version you can't even install it if you blocked the spy sites it
connects to, much less blocked the install of Zango. If you remove the
spyware, the new BearShare demands you let it reinstall the stuff before it will
even start up.

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 07:45 AM

why? what does the message say?

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 10:51 AM

It says BearShare cannot run because an unnamed component is missing, and offers to reinstall it.

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 01:42 PM

i know the company the made zango. im going to send them a hate letter and turn them in. what do you think about that?

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 03:42 PM

I think they'd laugh at you, then send the Gestap… Homeland Security to prosecute you for "making terrorist threats" :p

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 03:43 PM

By the way. Where are you getting Lite from?
I just tried and got a timeout on the download server.

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 03:54 PM

so they dont do anything to me i will just turn them in. so they shut their company down

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 04:56 PM

Ah. There it is. Looks like Zango is not in there, but the spyware in the installer
still tries to phone home several times as you install Lite.

I see the history is still blanked out. What are they trying to hide?

I also see a new part in the EULA where they reserve the right to force upgrades
on you and deny you the right to refuse or go back to old versions. If they had
been paying attention to users instead of hiding from them, they would know that
the users are virtually unanimous against forced upgrading.

In light of that idiocy I'd advise everybody to go to FrostWire the first time they try
to force one of these involuntary upgrades on them.

Every time these guys turn around they're pulling some boneheaded move guaranteed
to anger the public. Are they ever going to wise up and open a dialog with us?

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 05:01 PM

what is phone home? does that mean they try to call your home?

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 05:07 PM

No. It secretly connects to one of their websites.

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 05:41 PM

so i shouldnt get the new version of bs lite? i would get bs pro and support free peers. but im not supporting those scum sucking bitches at iMesh.

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 06:33 PM

BS Pro is owned by the same guys. Free Peers is no more after the iMesh guys
and the RIAA staged that "Lawsuit" which was actually a forced buyout.

Might as well stick to the betas as long as possible then settle for FrostWire,
which might be good enough in a year or two. ;]

garbagefan2 June 10th, 2006 06:42 PM

so bs pro is owned by the people from free peers. did free peers have the choice of not selling bs.i wouldnt sell it. why dont free peers just make a look a like of bs like limewire did with frostwire

AaronWalkhouse June 10th, 2006 07:07 PM

Free peers does not exist anymore. They are "no more".
The iMesh guys own everything that Free Peers used to.

garbagefan2 June 11th, 2006 09:17 AM

there is spyware in the installer? how do you know when it phones home?

AaronWalkhouse June 11th, 2006 10:38 AM

My firewall catches it. Before the iMesh guys got involved it never did that. ;]

garbagefan2 June 11th, 2006 10:52 AM

if my mcaffee firewall catches it will it still try to phone home? and will it download safely? im going to make the iMesh guys speechless. im going to send them a letter saying why did you include spyware in bearshare? and what website do they try to phone? i can try to block that site. and how do i block websites?

AaronWalkhouse June 11th, 2006 12:35 PM

If your firewall catches it then you get a chance to allow or deny it.

Looks like Lite let's you do that, but the Zango in the regular version, which
calls back to a rental rack for small/mid size business in Israel, will balk there.

So, just check the mark to make it a rule and block it.

They might just be taking a count, but they should put that info up front by
putting up a minibrowser on a local page, inviting you to drop in with a click.

If they had forums, for example, something for people to go to… ;)

garbagefan2 June 11th, 2006 12:54 PM

so bearshare lite doesnt have zango. and if i block the phoning home than nothing will happen it will dl safely. so no one wont spy on me. what if my firewall doesnt detect it? what firewall do you have?

AaronWalkhouse June 11th, 2006 01:55 PM

I have a creaky old Kerio you can't get and don't want but there are still
several free ones that are strong enough for BearShare. I think Kerio still has
a trial version, where all the advanced privacy and script functions eventually
quit or go into default modes but you still get a strong firewall. That's what
I'm using now, an old simple trial version that, free of the bells and whistles
already in new browsers, runs fast and strong at all times.

Now that I think of it, this thing is getting pretty old. I wonder what's new
out there? I see ads for something called Outpost here and there…

garbagefan2 June 11th, 2006 05:19 PM

i got two firewalls to protect me althought i have to disable one. i have mcaffee and windows. i just finished installing service pack 2. is that strong enough? and what does it try to phone? i will try to block the sites it tries to phone

AaronWalkhouse June 11th, 2006 05:24 PM

Why not run b25 instead? At 50 connections per download and 999 total plus
the ability to go into ultrapeer mode on demand, it's better than Pro.

garbagefan2 June 11th, 2006 05:32 PM

how can i get b25? the link u have is b20

AaronWalkhouse June 11th, 2006 05:52 PM

The link to b25 is there too, right at the bottom of my first post in that thread.

B Johnson November 8th, 2006 07:54 PM

It still comes bundled with Zango. My firewall blocked Zango and Bearshare ran for a few minutes then caused the pc to reboot. It also hijacked or at least attached the Bearshare logo on my google homepage. In order to use it you have to let Zango run. It is not worth it.
