Restoration of history in Firefox

I have accidentally deleted all my history in firefox and have been trying in vain to restore it using the folllowing method:-
I go to START > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore but when the date for which I want to retrieve the history is chosen in the calendar ( AND I HAVE TRIED IN VAIN SEVERAL DIFFERENT DATES) the end result is a message saying : "Your computer cannot be restored to that date".

My question: Why?

Many thks for any help and your patience with a 74-yr-old pensioner on a Medtierranean island.

Why do you loose your data?

Hi Joe

You asked:

I think there are two points to your question.

1) Old restore points tend to get automatically deleted after a while, I know I have tried to restore to a past point and it has not worked. If someone has a more technically sound explanation then please let me know as well.

2) Restore points restore "settings" not data, when data is deleted, for all intent and purposes, it's gone unless you have a special utility that restores deleted data.

However, I have personally not heard of, or looked for, utilities that can restore accidentally deleted browser histories. In my experience most people want to delete their browser histories, simply because it can be used by "certain external parties" to track your Internet usage.

If you still want to restore your Firefox history then I would suggest you check out the Firefox add-on site, you may find something there.

There is no way unless by some miracle you are able to restore the deleted settings file. A lot of the stored date if offline, so Mozilla can't do much.

Honestly a lost cause.

For future reference (it won't help you get back your lost history this time), you might be interested in MozBackup:MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird

I want to thank UKbobboby01, birdy, and Sleepless for their kindness in helping me out with the problem of a vanishing history in Firefox. They have been very helpful, kind, and knowledgeable.

Wish I could thank each one of them individually but cannot remember how to do it; hence this one message for the three of them.

Joe
