I'm sure someone will respond with a better answer. These days the system should auto-detect any new printer added to the computer and become the default printer. For Windows 8, you can quickly check by opening a new blank document with WordPad, type a few letters. Then go to File menu, select one of the options for Print. QuickPrint will select the default printer. Or if you select Print and Print you have the choice of printer to select if you have more than one printer or the default might be set to a previous printer used.

If you were referring to calibrating the printer then it's been too many years since i studied those concepts. Every printer brand and model and every scanner and monitor has it's own ... um .. cannot even think of the right word at the moment, but color biases / gamma settings (such as the black.) Not to mention variation in printer inks and paper. Back in the days, I had my own RGB & CMYK color charts, some customised for specific purposes. Ideally any scanner, monitor and printer should be calibrated for better accuracy of colors. MacOS has one advantage of using the WYSIWYG concept and color support which helps. (WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get.)
