Ba@@s - speakers up in smoke

just wrecked a set of altec lansing speakers-- loud buzz rapidly fading to nothing, followed by an acrid (electronic component) burning smell -- <sigh> never did like them any way...(don't ask me what I was doing at the time)

Personal recommendations for a replacement would be most welcome.

What sound card do you have?

lassie March 31st, 2005 10:48 AM

It's an interated audio procesor (on a A7N8X-E mobo)

and the handbook says:

"MCP-T southbridge integrated audio processor unit+Realtek ALC650 6-Channel audio CODEC"
It has three sockets on the rear panel:

1. S/PDIF output jack
2. Surround L/R audio jack
3. Centre/LFE audio jack

The DeaD Altec Lansing VS2121 set-up did not connect to the centre/LFE jack, but it did have a sub-woofer.

My criticism of the the dead set was that they were to 'thin' at the top end and too 'woofy' at the bottom - good for games perhaps but not audio reproduction i.e. films and music.....

..suggestions please :))

Hey, pp....

That is one very nice ACE type ASUS m'board...
NVidia drivers available from not a whole long time ago...

Man, it's the board I use for most new-builds for folks who wanna be 'current' while the 64 bit crap pin-outs are resolved... if ever !!!

My question is a whole lot more basic...

Where dat so-called energy come from to fry said garbahhhge speakers ???

And, are there no fuses inside said garbahhhge boxes ?

WOW.... Just where did this bolt out of the blue come from ...???
NOT that there ASUS m'board, I am sure...

Must be something else, hmmm ?

btw, lassie... for you...

Take a solid tip from ALL professional audio systems...

So-called 'equalizers' are simply junk rubbish if they present to you positive values re: gain...

NO true commercial mixing/effect equipment provides 'gain'...

ONLY attenuation.

Might be part of your problem... ???

Not being averse to a little experimentation I decided to 'fix' the problem of taxi-driver RF interference on the pc sound system...so I lined the sub-woofer box, which also contained the active electronics/psu, with aluminium foil.

Now when I put this all back togeter and tested it with my mobile phone (good source of RFinterfrence) it worked marvelously, but a little later, somehow the circuitboard or psu or something, got shorted out buy the foil...bye-bye (big-style) speaker system

Dare I but in 4 what little I've 2 add but in support of what peerless just said. If I'm not listening via headphones or fm headphones, then I'm listening via a 2nd set of speakers set up in this room; ie: comp>Stereo system>line back to room.

Thanks for the input all..hooking up to the hi-fi is not possible due to pc being in different room. Any way, I have made a purchase!

Active speakers again, but not particularly meant for pc use. They're book-case type with normal 4inch drive units and 3 inch tweeters. Very solid wooden cases and total 30w rms measure (of course).

Quite-to-very pleased with the increase in performance. Music has much more detail and there are no peculiar resonances.

After my spectacular accident with the aluminium foil think I'll steer clear of fitting a sound card lol...but headphones...hmm I've alwawy fancied getting an expensive set of those noise cancelling ...Zennishier (sp?)
