Actually I've saved lossless audio files down as little as 20-30% of original size using Apple's Lossless format (though average is 50-60%.) PCM audio is 48 KHz & due to its high bitrate is the non-prefered audio format for video due to the space it takes up on DVD's & the need to keep the combined audio & video bitrates below that that can be played without problems on "any" set-top DVD player. With greater sizes of hard disk drives & ever increasing in size, compressed lossless formats are much more practical nowadays. There's certainly a wise range of mp3 encoders out there. Not forgetting m4a format.
