Really interesting Sleepless, thanks for info, coupled with Microsoft's new operating system, which is skewed for copyright control by all accounts ! This is the beginning of the end unless enough folk make enough noise about 'rights' and censorship, are there any organisations with ''Clout'' in the protect your rights movement? or is it a ''Still small voice in the wilderness'' which will be smothered by the corporate machine? Vista is being pushed to the public on the 'Security' approach, scare them then sell the answer, nothing wrong with XP (Pretty ok anyway, now) people will NOT be told that they will be losing their rights if they buy the new vista !it;s written into the new system! what can we do? gradually support will be withdrawn from XP,so you end up having to buy !!
Thanks for bringing this up, hopefully more will comment !

Well ther are plenty of media players out there. When it comes time, why not just remove WMP and use a different one?

Lol. Haven't used WMP in a long time now. It freaks out if you add too many tracks ;)

How is WinAMP these days. Preferred by many it seems

I have winamp but i've only used it to listen to some internet radio, but it seems to work quite well. I still use WMP for videos. I tried to disable updates for it but I don't think it's possible. I could easily get along without it, so I'm not too worried......yet :).

Get a firewall that enables you to block it. Like the one I posted the link to in the "Antivirusprotection and so on" thread. You will be surprised how often Windows tries to connect to the internet.

E.g. every time you search a folder. What's up with that??

Bet they have this huge database where they store all the info they collect on the unsuspecting user.

6_pac October 25th, 2006 11:25 AM

Yes, I'm using sygate PF. It is odd how if I search my hdd windows tries to connect to the internet and at other times too. Sometimes just out of the blue it'll try to connect.

They could sneak it through as a critical update and most people will download without question. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Wonder how long before ALL media players will be forced into line??
possibly picked off one by one,if all these lawsuits carry on being won!

I wouldn't worry to much about that. If they go after makers of MPs as well then they will just not put their name on the software

M$ are not the same as everyone else. They are doing this to support their own interests and not because someone is forcing them to.

Just go for freeware if that happens

Just installed WinAMP v.5.31

Very nice interface once you get the hang of it

If I should mention one thing I don't like about it, it's that there is no option to display the path in the library windows (very handy for getting rid of duplicates)

You can still do it by right-click get info, but it's more time consuming

(Oh and it took my three months worth of playing time) :yahoo:

Is there any way to STOP windows connecting to the internet whenever it wants? I know with some FWalls you can deny update access etc, but try denying op. system, no way.

Sleepless October 29th, 2006 12:56 AM

The Sygate Firewall will ask youŽevery time ANYTHING tries to connect to the internet. You will need to get some insight into what processes to allow though

A good way is using google to check. Just type the exact name of the process into the search.

Allowing them a few times more probably won't hurt. as you have allready done this the whole time while using Windows Firewal

Thanks Sleepless, will try, forsee a steep learning curve with denial ! and thanks for google tip.
