Different countries sometimes have different times for such types of events.

I always thought this was a US only thing ... and I always envied them for it

Just like christmas, I believe in USA they have the dinner, etc the night before. We have it on that day (25th.) Then watch the cricket test the following day with the poms getting thrashed ... lmao :rofl: :rofl2:

I think thanksgiving is something to do with pilgrims but, as a UK resident, I have no idea what it is about.

I've seen films where Americans sit around the family table eating their thanksgiving meal consisting of candied yams (I know what yams are but "candied yams"?), cranberry sauce (I don't think we have this in the UK) and turkey, which we traditionally have on Christmas day.

So if a US forum member would like to explain "Thanksgiving" and what a traditional thanksgiving meal consist of then this UK forum member would have seen the solving of another one of life's little mysteries.

It's thanksgiving today here. It's about pilgrims. In school they said they had a big feast because they wanted to celebrate that they survived. And that they were thankful for it.

Imagine where the USA would be today if they hadn't survived. It must have been the candied yams & cranberry sauce that contributed.

Thanks. I am going to my Aunt's house. There will be a lot of food! I am taking my laptop to get it fixed. There's nothing wrong with it but I wanted to install Xubuntu and my cousin will help me. He went to college for computers. I want to like him.

US Thanksgiving
 

As an American, I guess I've taken the whole "Thanksgiving" holiday for granted. We learn about the Pilgrims & the discovery of America in grade school & go on in life to continue the yearly traditional celebration. I'm ashamed to say that I usually don't give too much thought to the real reason behind the holiday each year as I get ready for it. The day is a day that is planned for well in advance. The menus are decided, grocery lists are made, family members decide who will bring which side dishes... It is a time for food, family & fun. It is a time to be thankful for all that we have.

Reading this post really got me to thinking. How to explain Thanksgiving Day to someone not America born? So I cheated & got a little help with it. Following is a formal explanation of our American Thankgiving Day.

The true meaning of “Thanksgiving,” and its involvement with the very foundation of our Nation can be readily gleaned from the Proclamations establishing it and history itself. One of the “First Thanksgiving Proclamations,” issued in 1676, by the Governing Council of Charlestown, Massachusetts proclaimed, “a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favor.”

In the U.S. Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November and as stated is a time for families to get together and give thanks for the things we all take for granted. Then you fall asleep on the couch during the football game:D.
