New to Limewire & want to stay legal Just downloaded Limewire Basic and turned filter content "on". Proceeded to download audio and got warning that license content could not be found- proceed anyway? Can I download files like this? I tried a Metallica song beacuase I know my 16 y/o will try to download them & because of their involvement in copyright laws. I also tried dowloading a song from the 30 y/o cartoon Charlottes Web. Both got this warning. These songs will be burned onto CD's for private listening only. Can I copy/burn this type of stuff or am I in violation of applicable laws? I really don't want my son or I to be contacted by federal authorities 6 months from now with a warrant. An honest and frank answer is appreciated. Thank you - Ken |
Well ... depends upon your local copyright laws. If something can be purchased on CD then it is copyright. And yes, Metallica is extremely anti-p2p sharing unlike 'some' other commercial artists. And unlike those yet to be signed to a recording company who appreciate the distribution of their music via p2p & thus the popularity, etc. it can gain for them. My answer is short because copyright laws differ as per country. Risks is generally related to quantity. Some countries downlding copyright material is not illegal but uploading it is. Some countries neither uplding or downlding is illegal. |
How do I learn about copyright laws in the U.S.? So according to what you said "if it's available on CD it's copyrighted", that doesn't leave a whole heck of alot of stuff to download right? I mean what CAN you download? It sounds like I can only download local upstart bands without recording labels and that's about it. I don't see how Limewire can operate with a sharefile based on such a small market. If I've seen it on T.V., saw it at the theatres, or heard it on the radio; it's going to have been copyrighted. I don't mean to sound negative but I heard all this hype about how great it was to burn CD's off of Limewire and it looks like you really can't (read not allowed). That means everyone I know is in violation of some federal law. |
LimeWire & the Gnutella network were never designed for downloading copyright material. If that's the impression the media give then that's their opinion only. It's a user population problem re: sharing copyright material. Quality of Content on the Network (click on link). What do you think it's ok to download something for free that the music stores are asking you to pay for? To share music is a concept as I mentioned earlier in my 1st post. I'm sure you have many brothers & sisters out there. |
So basically all Limewire and these similar sites are good for is to downlaod crap you might hear in a nightclub that no decent label will record. P.S. Your link tried to hijack my computer. Is there an alternate link? |
It's simply a popup link like all links on this forum. It was a link to another thread on the forum. You must have your popups in your browser set to "no" for this forum. The link is not so important so just ignore it. |
