connecting to an ip address

i posted this question back in december, but didnt get any good answers so i am trying again(that was also back in ver 1.6)

i am trying to connect to a specific host and cant seem to establish a connection. i add the person's ip address in the connections tab, click add, and wait...

it never connects though. tries for about 20 seconds then times out.

can this even be done? am i doing something wrong? it seems logical that you would be able to do this.

Are you, or the IP you are trying to connect to using a Firewall? If so, then you might need to add the respective IP's in your Firewall configurations to allow them to pass through.
Also, are you using the same port on both ends?

Just a thought..............

pretty sure we are using the same ports.

as for the fiewalls, i will try what you suggested.

thanks for the help!!

You want to connect to a friend and download from him, am I right?

Try it with a static IP, give your host a name instead of an IP:

http://www.no-ip.com/

The free offer is enough!!!

Generally connecting to a specific host within Gnutella is very tricky I managed it one time but wasn´t able to download from this host!

Perhaps you should set up a ftp server!

yes morgwen i was trying to download from a friend.

i checked out that website you suggested. question- if we both have cable ISP's dont we both have static IP addresses? it's my understanding that the IP address changes only with dial up. i could certainly be mistaken though.

i'll try it anyway. thanks

i figured an FTP server would work. i just thought that it would be logical (and easy) to do with LW

Normally not, but you can see it... if the IP is always the same it is a static IP!

Suggestion:

Get on AOL IM and use the file swapping function. I just tried it the other day. You can do single files or folders or even connect to another person's computer (as long as they set up their IM preferences to grant you access) and pull files from their computer. I'm on a MAC and was connecting to my wife's PC and sent her an entire album in about 2 minutes.
