can't get a connection

I am connected through a network at school. I have morpheus and I can connect to that fine, but when I try to connect to limewire the connection light turns green for a second and then goes back red.
Thanks,
Missy

Try getting a gnutella.net file here:

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=11123

Rename the file to gnutella.net and put it into the directory where you installed LimeWire.

I downloaded the file that you said and it still isnt working. Is there anything else that I could try?

This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you rename the file so it works properly? When you download it? After? Is the file supposed to be a text file when you put it in the LimeWire directory?

It is supposed to be a file named "gnutella.net", not "gnutella.net.txt"
So just remove the ".txt" from the end after downloading it. (right-click, rename)

Oh, and if you're using windows with those "hide file extension" options on, go and turn them off from the folder options.

(I hate windows for those lame newbie-protection systems that are on by default, and some of them cannot be turned off)

I finally got it to connect. I did rename the file, but it was still a text file through msdos. I already had a file named gnutella.net when i downloaded limewire but it was empty, so I opened it through notepad and copied and pasted everything from gnutel.net.txt to gnutella.net and now it works!!

When downloading it or with the explorer (although the latter usually doesn't show the file extensions by default).

It's not supposed to be a text-file after changing the extension.

Ok, I am getting very frustrated with this. I downloaded 2.4.2 and I am on it, but it will not let me connect. I have tried almost everything i have read in the forums! Does anyone know what i can do? I have tried to change it to the bearshare.net and i have tried the gnutellanet.net and copying it and putting it in the limeworm file directory and i have no clue why it is not working! Any help, PLEASE! Thank you in advance! and ASAP!

Open your dos-prompt. Change to the directory where you put the gnutella.net.txt. Rename it with.

rename gnutella.* gnutella.net

Than copy it to your LimeWire directory with:

copy gnutella.net C:\progra~1\LimeWire

That's it. The gnutella.net contains just a couple of ips (~500). When none of them is online (which might even happen) you won't be able to connect.

To see if it worked, look at your connections tab after launching limewire. Limewire should be trying to connect to varius addresses.

Not connecting

Gnutella 2.43
Only Firewall = Zonealarm
Connecting to net through academic backbone.

Tried downloading and using list of ips as recommended -still no connection.

Limewire just sits there

Number of degres in CompSCi, Physics etc.. Teaching P2 next year to undergrads..

Having spent a year using/teaching Linux (recently removed it as it was unstable and very inefficient - yes it probably was set up wrong but when you're concerned about productivty you havn't always time to look for the latest RPM, find the right driver etc etc).. it strike me that Limewire is a product that suffers the same problems as linux and many open source projects i.e from lack of resource and not customer centric. I have just spent an afternoon trying to get this system to work.. it doesn't. A typical experince with OS material.. promises so much.. but delivers very little..........

Most universities block the public gnutella host caches, so you won't be able to connect with LimeWire. The ip list was just something like an experiment (I guess you didn't try a recent list anyway, since I didn't post any). Here's a newer one (although it ain't the newest one. I don't want to interrupt that guy who's downloading "The House On Chasey Lain" from my computer and I have to quit LimeWire to save a new gnutella.net)
ftp://anonymous:anonymous@whitedrago...g/gnutella.net

The problem with that list is, that you need a little luck to connect.

As for your attitude towards OS, - you might be right, that it's probably nothing for computer-illiterates but your opinion that OS would deliver less than it promises and that it wasn't customer centric is very wrong. Maybe you should give some thought to who the customers of OS are, - and I believe most of them are quite satisfied with what they get.

P.S.
How come, somebody who is obviously not able to form a complete sentence is teaching undergrads?
