Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online. 10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents. 11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. ![]() ::Blurp:: I have a few issues and a few rants , some of them are actually Limewire/ Gnutellafella related. Number One: There are too many slime hands on this network with Cable/DSL with their 50-100 dollar NATs who won't do a simple eFFin port map . OOoo that burns my bradey. Number Two: I am lookin at the interface right now and I am seeing some connections showin up in green some in black ( BTW, if you aren't using dual monitors you have NO IDEA what you are missing). Wut doz it meen!! Me feel so stupid. Colors challenge me. ...... and after a cursory glance at the help files i didn't get an answer, so like a good american if a little work doesn't pan out I'll just ask someone smarter than me and pretend i knew all along. Number Three: Here is my biggest pet peeve. Leave it on. Simple isn't it, just start the software and leave it on. So why do so many people have issues with that? MYTH: Uploads slow your download speeds. REALITY : Almost every single connectione you will ever ever ever encounter operates in Full Duplex, Meaning sending and recieving are done serially ( one bit at a time) on seperate channels. MYTH: Running Limewire affects my Productivity because it slows My computer down/makes it unstable. REALITY : I WANT YOUR FILEWS. Get a faster computer or get another computer and devote it solely to P2P systems. Failing that send me an email listing all the files you want to share along with your address and i will come over with a portable drive and suck them off your system. I realize that sounds selfish, but I Currently have over 1500 files share and yeah theres a load of porn there, but there also lots of Music files and a large number of varoius programz . okay I'm done for now. ![]() WOW. You have much hate built up in you, and no sense of humor, but I will attempt to respond to your evil rantings.. First let me address the whole not an american thing. My psychic sense is telling me I am talking to a die hard patriot since 9-11. I oon the other hand have been a patriot for a hell of alot longer than that. I have served my country in ways you can possibly not even imagine. It is my belief that we americans are lazy , just read the majority of the posts on these boards. On the Upload Download thing, no i am not wrong. I suggest you read a book sometime on basic networking and components. Once , a long time ago some modems were half duplex in nature, but since about 94 they all became Full. And any highspeed is Full Duplex. And as far as 56k goes, I do not search them and I remember the pain of dial up. My remarks are aimed at joe thirtypack with his cheapo NAT improperly configured and who only logs into limewire when he wants something. And yes I DO share over 1500 files and the vast majority were not obtained through ant kind of P2P network. I personally converted much of my music and programz to portable formats just to be a good neighbor. And I even included serailz in most of the packagesI can send you a screen shot if you would like. I am not a leecher. My connection is always on and my client is always up and I log a crapload of uploads every single day. I think I can be a little pushy when there happens to be a file I am looking for. I apologize if I got yer dander up, and I thank you for a totally ridiculous reply. |

My reason is this: If I set my speed to cable/DSL, I watch the speeds of uploaders all drop to 2kb/sec. When I switch it back to T3, they speed up to more acceptable speeds. Can't give exact numbers, because that depends on the other persons capabilities, but they significantly speed up. So, I feel that I am helping the network. I can get more hosts and more results on searches (which, yes, helps me). I am sharing 650+ files. Not as many as you, but I think that's pretty good. As for only logging in when I want something, well, it's more like only logging in when I have some time to kill. LW takes some time to tweak, and such, to get it downloading. If I leave it on for a prolonged period of time, it eventually freezes up my whole computer. Not intermittently, but everytime. So, I won't leave it running 24/7. I have more important things to do on the computer. Just for information, my system is: Mac G4 Dual 450 processors 384 MB RAM OS 9.1 LimeWire 2.6.4 (<----- ? I lose track of the # sometimes) Anyway, please fill me in if there's a way that I can configure my modem in a way to help us all out. I'd appreciate it. I am not talking about a cable modem. A real cable modem is just a media bridging device . I talking about the so called "routers" that peole use to share their connections or use as a rudimentary firewall. Almost every single device that falls into this class is not really a true router as they are labeled, but use a routing protocol called NAT or network address translation to simply share an external IP among several internal IP's. To this end a NAT takes the place of the standard end node attatched to the actual network (internet) . It must have a t least two interfaces. The clients are then configured ( typically by dynamic host configuration protocol and conforming to RFC standards of private IP address ranges, usually a 192.168.x.y/24) so that the nats internal Interface is thier gateway and DNS server. When they need to go to the outside world they talk to the NAT. Now unlike a router a NAT takes the original request and stripps off all the information that identifies they original requesting internal host and substitutes itself as the original requestor, effectively plagerising the request. It also keeps track of the session so that any responses can be directed back to the true source node correctly. This effectively makes a one way connection. An internal client can get out, but since the NAT is not actually the real client no independant inbound connections can ever come in because the NAT doesn't have an idea who to send them to. This is one of the ideas behind a "stateful " connection. So a NAT is much more secure that a router, but turns you into a total leech if you are using P2P software UNLESS you do morethan just take it out of the box and turn it on. To not be a leech, you need to configure the NAT correctly. One mechanism that IP uses to differentiat diffrent types of traffic and identify service type requests is a packet level component we call port number. There are 1024 "well known" port numbers and a total of 65,536 usable numbers. These port numbers are by no means set in stone when it comes to actual usage, but they provide us with a set of standards that can be applied to govern and identify traffic. For example HTTP typically uses port 80: FTP, 21; SMTP, 25 ; and this particular service uses 6346. To not be a leech we have to therefore map port 6346 on the NAT to device to what ever the internal IP we are using is. This will let independant connections only on this port in to the correct system. You could also map IP's but this really unsecure and I could never reccomend it. Getting back to you specifically Julie, I could care less about misreporting the speed of your connection, so sorry no flame on that, and it sounds like you are not a leech. I don't use a mac, but my gut feeling is that maybe OSX based in Linux might solve your stability issues; I have none with XP or Win2K . Of course I don't expect you to really upgrade your OS because of a n issue with P2P networking, and my original post not wholly intened to be taken literally. Jeez I shouldn't even have to say that! Anyways thank you for an intelligent response Paranoid |

I had read previously that they had to do with confirmed speed and incorrectly claimed speed. Which is why I misunderstood your original post. I am not very computer-lingo-savvy. Heck, I'm not even very computer-savvy. So, I do thank you for the explanation about NAT vs. Router. Always glad to learn something new. ![]() |
