Limewire with a Linksys Router!
 

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has had any success getting limewire to work with their Linksys Cable Router! I have acouple mahcines hooked up behind my router but cannot get it to connect. I have no troulbes with iMesh, any ideas?

I have it working for me, but I only have one PC running LimeWire.

I also have the Advanced / Port Forwarding option working so that I can get inbound connections, as well as Push requests.

I had to update the firmware, though, before the port forwarding worked properly. I am now on firmware v1.37 (there's a more recent one, too).

If you want more than one PC, you should still do port forwarding but you should set each PC to use a different port number (not the default 6346 or whatever). Then forward that port to the correct internal IP address.

Also, I have an ADSL line with a dynamic IP address. I manually do the Force IP Address setting in LimeWire but every week or so I have to fix it when they change my outside IP.

I am on the same type of dynamic DSL Ip's that you are on... I did find something that was a little more useful... go to:

http://www.deerfield.com

and download dns2go.... it allows your computer to map a dynamic IP to a static name... and on limewire since you can enter names and numbers for Ip's you just type in the name and go to town it's all free to (if your using a subdomain of dns2go.com) I realize that it's a little overblown for solving the gnutella problem but I thought it might be useful if you want to set up any sort of servers in the future...

as for the linksys thing... I found that linksys is a little flakey on high port numbers... if you want to have gnutella work nicely you may want to forward the ports on a lower number... say less than 1000.

As for forwarding an dns2go name - that will not work without interaction. Because if your IP changes, limewire will continue reporting your old IP to the gnutella net. Check out the item FORCED_IP_ADDRESS in the file limewire.props for that. As you can imagine, reporting the wrong address is much worse then doing no IP-forwarding at all.
So, even if you are using a static name, you still have to update your settings when your IP changes. Uncheck forwarding - Apply - and check it again will do the job for me. Don't forget it. When you're seeing incoming connections, then it should be OK.
