is the firewall software based (installed on your xp computer) or is it a dsl router type firewall (ex: linksys)?

norton firewall

The following works for 'norton personal firewall'. I hope that helps.

When running norton firewall and you start limewire for the first time, it will tell you: 'Sun Microsystems Java Web is attempting to listen for connections from other computers/to access the internet.' That's limewire trying to connect.

From the popup, choose: 'Always allow connections fo this program on all ports.'

If this already happened and you instead chose to block the connections, then you have to change these settings to let limewire through, here's how to do that:

open Norton Personal Firewall, go to 'status & settings', 'personal firewall' and click on 'configure'. then click on the 'program control' tab and where it says 'Sun Microsystems Java Web', click the popup and choose 'permit all', then click 'ok'.

Be sure to fully quit limewire (right click on system tray icon if it's still there and choose 'exit') and then restart limewire.

You should have no more problems connecting.
