Can't connect

First time user with Limewire.
Install newest version but just can't connect
I can see the red button turn green for a second
when I push connect but that's it.
Don't know if that mean anything but I have nothing
when I push connections.
I use win 95 on a Pentium 133
Add to format it last week

Help :(

me too

i just downloaded limewire today...the newest version. i have windows xp and everytime i try to connect it flashes for a second just how it does for pretty much everyone else on this forum...i put in the 6346 in the software and i turned off my firewall completely. i read all of the other forums and tried most everything everyone else did...but it still isnt working... what do i do?

PunkRockScholar August 14th, 2003 02:21 PM

I have the same problem. After doing some research on the LimeWire website i found that it is actually your ISP blocking you from the Gnutella network. I am still looking for a way around this...Anyone have a suggestion??

somekid August 14th, 2003 07:28 PM

hmm

Well now i'm really confused. The night i got Limewire i was evntually able to connect after leaving it open for a long time and just waiting it out. The next day i tried to connect again, and it didnt work. i havent been able to connect at all since....

PunkRockScholar August 14th, 2003 08:26 PM

I tried both Free Wire and Lime Wire...Free Wire worked fine at first then all the sudden i couldnt connect. I un-installed it and installed Lime Wire. Lime Wire never would connect.

defcon014 August 15th, 2003 08:47 AM

i cant connect either. i have a mac and os x and i keep having the same problems that you guys are. does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it? could it be a firewall issue? can you do anything if it is? just email me at ovrlord008@aol.com if anyone comes up with anything. thanx alot

...

I don't think its a firewall problem because I shut mine off completely to try to make LimeWire connect and it still didn't. I think the ISP idea is worth a shot to look in to. But honestly, I'm ready to just give up on LimeWire all together... I may as well just buy my music.

PunkRockScholar August 16th, 2003 08:10 AM

SUCCESS!

Yep, I ended up just giving up on the whole Lime Wire deal. I changed over to Kazaa Lite. At first it wouldn't connect but I went to the Kazaa help section and it suggested changing the port number on my firewall to something over 5000 because more than likely my ISP was blocking me from being able to connect to the Gnutella network. Sure enough after changing the port number to 7000 I connected immediately and its been working fine ever since. Im sure if you know how to change your firewall port number with LimeWire, you will be able to get it working.

somekid August 16th, 2003 06:09 PM

hmm well...how would i change the port number on my firewall? I'm not sure if that would help me though because it didnt connect when I turned my firewall off completely...

PunkRockScholar August 16th, 2003 09:28 PM

 I dunno. lol. Yeah i didnt know how to change the port number either until i downloaded Kazaa Lite. I HIGHLY recommend it. I haven't had one incomplete download and my spyware killer hasnt found anything.

I have the same problem. But on windows2000 only. Works fine on my linux box. (Version 3.4.4).

Connection problems

I am very disapointed with limewire,

as a network admin (with all root access to all routing and FW devices) from a major european ISP, I should have been able to solve those connetion issues but no. And I can tell you, we are not filtering nor blocking P2P traffic.

I have found only two alternatives:

*1: Back to school (well, sorry I don't have time for that)

*2: Switch to other gnutella softs (BearShare 4.2.8 work just fine after installing it just by clicking on the exe file)

I was a big fan from limewire, but I think this is the last time I'm trying to use it, sorry folks versions 3+ arr not good.

I can only encourage you to fix this problem ASAP as LimeWire was a very good

Interesting Jo-bi

Could the filters be upstream of you? (The recent New York power failure shouldn't be enough of a factor, but http://www.limewire.com/english/content/netsize.shtml shows a drop back to the bad old days of the beginning of this year).

One of my ISP's uses NBAR software, and they are also trying Sandvine. The other connects just fine, so it's not the new LW versions that is the problem here.

As an admin for a major European ISP, would you be able to find out why LW is having connection problems with certain ISP's?

somekid August 17th, 2003 11:56 AM

woot!

Okay. So LimeWire works. I found the problem under tools/options - advanced/firewalls and ports. All of the numbers were different for some reason or another..but now my firewall and port numbers are both 6348 and then number in the box in connections is 6346. Somehow that made it work and its been working since.

stief August 17th, 2003 01:59 PM

hi somekid

if you try 6346 in tools/options - advanced/firewalls and ports (the 6346 in the connections pane is there to allow you to connect to a known host that uses a different port) and you have trouble connecting, you'll know enough to ask your ISP if they block that port.

Still, LW comes with 6346 as the default, so I'd be curious to how that port got changed.

Any ideas?

somekid August 17th, 2003 03:17 PM

??

I have no clue why it was 6348 and not 6346 then... I've also noticed that the more songs you download, the easier it is to reconnect but you also have to be able to connect a first time before you can download anything. Not that I've had problems at all... anymore :). Oh and I thought maybe there's something to do with the javaw.exe program that comes with LimeWire... my firewall asks me if it can connect to the internet everytime I turn on LimeWire.. but it wasn't asking when it wasn't connecting and I think I did something with that when it finally started working. I'm not sure... I don't remember anymore but once it asked me it also turned on. So maybe the port numbers had nothing to do with my problem.

stief August 17th, 2003 05:20 PM

Thanks--and enjoy sharing. Maybe the rumoured "need to share 100 files" was a factor since you're connecting easier with more files. Cheers

Bazaree August 17th, 2003 07:11 PM

solution!!?

hello all

i just downloaded limewire and was having the same problem.
everytime i tried to connect it would turn green for a second and back to red again. but now i'm connected and this is how.......
copy some mp3s into your shared folder. restart your computer and then go online. run limewire and go into your shared folder. the mp3s you put in should appear. select one and click the "launch button". i'm not sure if i was then connected automatically or if it was after i clicked the connect button. either way thats what worked for me and i've i know idea why. also my firewall and port settings are at default 6346. using win me.

hope this works for ye

good luck

Blackbird August 17th, 2003 10:53 PM

I know why it was changed to 6348.

Limewire can tell when you are using another gnutella program, for instance, aquisition, bearshare, etc. Because it detects another client using the default gnutella port 6346, it bumps up the port number once, and so and so forth for every active gnutella client.

stief August 18th, 2003 06:08 AM

Thanks--makes sense.

somekid August 18th, 2003 07:42 PM

but!

I don't have any other Gnutella programs at all though. Just LimeWire.

somekid August 18th, 2003 07:53 PM

100?

whats the "need 100 shared files" thing about? I probably had like 10 by my second time being on LimeWire and it worked fine and would connect immediately.

stief August 18th, 2003 08:21 PM

There is a setting for the number of files a person has to share before they can connect to you (tools->Options->Advanced->Preferencing). I leave my setting at the default (freeloaders can connect), but heard that sharing more than 100 files increased your chances at better connections. I rarely hear of anyone who changes that setting, but who knows? Some people really dislike leeches and would set that number higher.

Anyway, I prefer to see as much or more uploads as downloads. Anyone can be a leech and fair is fair.

somekid August 19th, 2003 08:17 PM

ooh. well it still shouldnt be 100. i mean...everyones gotta start somewhere.

somekid August 21st, 2003 04:00 PM

Your right. And I could have put my own mp3s on there too..and I still could. I'm sure it would have helped me connect in the first place. But eh, I'm good now. :)
